I want to give some flowers to a very great friend of mine, a true icon of Rave culture, Ron Wells, better known to many as the music legend Jack Smooth.
Ron was a major player in the scene from the late 80s, producing some of the freshest underground music around and bringing that acid house and warehouse sound to our ears.
I met Ron in 1991 and from the first day we linked up the bond was tight. Endless laughs in the studio, incredible music being made, and Ron engineering some of my biggest records a real family vibe.
Even as artists coming out of his studio started blowing up, he worked even harder to make them more successful. He was always cheering you on, helping your ideas come to life, a truly remarkable human.
His studio 14B became an iconic spot. The likes of Carl Cox, Loftgroover, Alex Hazard, Mayhem and DJ Gemini all passed through there, along with many others.
Me and Ron have never had a disagreement in all the years we’ve known each other, just lots of laughs and creativity and his amazing partner Lorraine, she treated us as her brothers and sisters and always made us feel so welcome in their home.
A true groundbreaker who has helped so many artists along the way.
I’m grateful to have met and worked with such a funny, humble guy and someone I’m proud to call a real friend. I can still hear that huge laugh echoing through the studio.
Ron, here are your flowers.
