Forgive me, I didn’t take nearly as many pictures as I probably should have. But when Wright State brought me on to write this piece, they gave me the rare gift of total artistic freedom. I could write about anything. And in that season of brainstorming, there was only one thing on my mind: parenthood—specifically, the first three months. I’m deep in that chapter of life myself, and it’s a period we don’t talk about nearly enough. So many shifts, especially for the mother—her body, her mental health, her identity, her daily life, her sense of responsibility. It’s one of the most profound transitions a person can experience.
What strikes me is that “change” is at the heart of what we do in musical theatre—yet we rarely see this kind of change portrayed onstage. We’ve seen parenthood in film and television, sure. But I haven’t seen the gritty, exhausting, unglamorous reality of it in a theatrical setting: the diapers, the feedings, the strollers, the late nights and early mornings, the doctor’s appointments, the sacrifice, and the physical and emotional toll it can take. And I definitely haven’t seen it centered on parents of color.
This isn’t an autobiographical piece, but it absolutely pulls from my emotional truth, along with stories I’ve gathered over the years from friends, coworkers, and fellow parents—stories I’ve shaped into a fictional, musicalized world.
Anyone who knows me knows my work is rooted in hip hop—not just in form, but in principle. It’s about keeping it real. If I’m going to tell a story, it has to be honest, even when it’s uncomfortable. Especially then.
I’m deeply grateful to my collaborators
