Title: Food desert | Found frame, sand paper, historical postal stamps, fridge food magnets
Around my neighborhood, I’ve witnessed officers confiscating food and produce from unlicensed vendors, only to discard it in the trash even during that time of potential cuts to food assistance benefits. Many families could make use of that food. This piece highlights the systemic issues surrounding food in certain communities. Stereotypes, Health, survival, access etc.
“Gator Bait” Alligator taxidermy head, brillio, cowry shells, watermelon seeds.
This piece is grounded in the Jim Crow era and the propaganda folklore that contributed to the dehumanization of Black people during that time. The work also engages with the spiritual and historical dimensions of the alligator, including the use of alligator teeth as talismans for protection and prosperity, while highlighting the historical irony that Black labor was once central to the alligator industry, with Black hunters and handlers highly sought after for their skill and knowledge. Wearing a pair of Mauris is conceptual in itself.
“A Dice Game with Spirits”
Installation for @shemar.pierre music video “Harlem shake”
This installation explores the intersection of ritual, memory, and the unseen. Conceptually, the project staircase functions as a portal, a space where the veil between worlds is thin. The dice game embodies communion a form of veneration connecting participants with ancestral energies and the spirits of the other side. Whether expressed through building shrines, performing libations for loved ones, or wearing symbolic beads and motifs, these practices reveal a depth of meaning that transcends the visible, carrying traditions that predate colonial histories. Knowledge of self and collective memory are ongoing processes, embedded in ritual, art, and community.
