Looking back at my solo exhibition that finished on 10 April. It was such a privilege to have all my work together in such a beautiful space. It would not have been a success without the people who engaged with the work, either online or physically. It was also a privilege to have renowned artist Gerhard Marx opening my exhibition. His talk gave so much extra meaning and depth to my work. I quote, "When I look at Ronel’s work - Here, the vast openness and the emptiness is another form of sublime. It is a glorious kind of emptiness. A full emptiness. An exultant beauty combined also with a nostalgia, maybe a sweet sense of impending loss perhaps, a sense of what is referred to an ecological grief, or ‘solastalgia’. ‘Solastalgia’ is a new word coined to describe the homesickness one feels when in a familiar environment - when one is in a sense ‘at home’, but with an awareness that everything is changing around you. That what is familiar is slipping. A sense of marvel. Marvelling that involves a loss of self. An acute awareness of what is called the ‘more than human’. An awareness that we are not walking ON the landscape, that the landscape is not there FOR us, but that we are consumed by it, intricately part of it. Ronel’s painting is about a relationship - a relationship with the world around her. When looking at her work one is not so much “seeing” the world, as one is “seeing the world being seen”.
