In the Preamble of Macedonia’s Constitution, the country’s Roma are placed in equal par with other minorities such as the Turks, Vlachs, Albanians, Serbs, and Bosniaks. The country’s government even included the Roma language in the 1994 census, encouraging many Romani to be tallied as Roma. In 1996, four primary schools in Macedonia began to offer instruction in the Roma language as an option. Also, since 1990, although in small numbers, Roma have been members of Macedonia’s parliament. While these actions may not completely eliminate prejudice and discrimination against Romani in the country, it is a step in the right direction and hopefully Macedonia will continue to lead by example and bring other countries on board. Last June in Belgrade, Serbia, a Roma family received their 4th eviction notice in recent years. The father, his three children, and three grandchildren were not initially given information on alternative housing until the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) requested the Serbian government to do so. The Serbian government then offered different housing to the father and his son, potentially separating the family unfairly. When Roma families are forcefully evicted, they often face anti-Roma housing discrimination and have little recourse in the justice system, particularly in Serbia.
