The 1990s were the decade the Rolex Middle Sea Race rose like a phoenix. After the race was not held between 1983 and 1996, new life was breathed into the classic offshore — and those that took part helped set the course for everything that has followed.
In the overall contest, Bigfoot secured the revival race in 1996, Albablu followed up in 1997, while Leo Pigier mastered the brutal 1998 conditions, and Aspirin Astro 2K closed out the decade in 1999. The Line Honours victors were Alexia, Sagamore (S&S), Riviera di Rimini and Sagamore (ILC Maxi). These winners provide the chapter headings for the beginning of the race’s modern story. Four years, eight standout campaigns, and a decade that helped shape the future of the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
