This photo was taken moments after we wrapped photography on BLOOD FOR DUST around 5AM on Saturday December 17th.
22 days of principle photography and one day of 2nd unit work and somehow we covered 40+ bespoke locations. Our incredible locations - all in and around Billings Montana - were found by our location manager/scout/fixer (and one of my favorite people) Thomas Story. The character of Montana - and the other North West locations and cities that the Billings area doubled for on screen are all because of Thomas’ work - and the Story family name (more on him soon).
You can’t tell exactly where we are in this photograph (no spoilers) but locations are characters in my films. It’s why I love making movies in real places; the ability to step inside rooms or onto land - and then get to experience a brief moment in time in that place, especially as we imagine and capture our characters experience and realities in that location.
As I sit here, 10 days out from the release of BLOOD FOR DUST, it’s wild to think that this photograph captured our final moment together in Montana. There isn’t a single pick up shot in the entire film - we certainly didn’t have the money to film anything else - and we also didn’t have the time once we got into post. Literally the material that’s in the film came from those 22+1 days in Montana.
Scoot, Kit and I haven’t been in the same room since we wrapped - but I know we will all be together again some day soon. I love these two men deeply. They gave me everything they had and believed in what we were doing - and how we were doing it. One day near the town of Laurel, Thomas Story came up to me and said “Hey, the owner of this gas station is a huge Game of Thrones fan. She printed out this photo of Kit from the internet. Do you think he’d write her a note?” I took the envelope and a sharpie to Kit’s trailer and without hesitation he smiled and wrote them a message.
Making movies is hard. It’s also beautiful. And there’s nothing better than making movies with people you love. I love these two men. This is their movie. They’re remarkable in the film and I can’t wait for people to see them go toe to toe.

Love this idea! @youtube can we make this happen? Part of my conversation with filmmaker @rodblackhurst 🎥 #indiefilm #youtubemovies #moviemaking #filmdistribution #filmmaking @youtubecreators
There are a few weeks every spring and every fall where the light digs into our house like this in the morning and it makes me happy. Also makes me think of the mysterious ways the world works. Those two photos above the piano are my images from the cover of rhe @eric_bachmann Crooked Fingers album “Forfeit/Fortune” that I took when Eric and I were living in Patrick Marold’s warehouse in Denver. And it took a random email in my inbox from Michel Faber who wrote UNDER THE SKIN - hunting me down to tell me how much he loved my images and asking for prints. So I made us some too.
For years now I’ve been trying to find an alternate way for filmmakers to be first in line to make money from their work. This isn’t a perfect solution and there are challenges I haven’t solved for yet (all of which came up in the Reddit thread I started a month ago), but just imagine if an independent film could reach the largest global audience with just a single upload AND be first in line to benefit financially from their work (excluding the % YouTube would take).
The creative class and indie filmmakers are struggling. Let there be one way to exhibit work with very few kept gates and see what happens.
New podcast episode!! Just dropped a killer convo with director/co-writer of “Dolly” @rodblackhurst !! This was one of my favorite @fantastic.fest movies I reviewed last year! Join us as we talk “Dolly”, slow-burn tension, and somehow spiral into pure horror nerd chaos.
Easily one of my favorite episodes & Rod was an amazing guest (we didn’t even talk his favorite horror movies, so you know I will have him back on!). Check out “Dolly now on @shudder & VOD!!

Wednesday night was good for my soul. @juliaglausi and @beckandwoods invited me up to Davenport Iowa to their cinema @thelastpichouse for a special screening of DOLLY. I left with a little more gas in my tank knowing that there are other kind and good people trying to navigate being parents, filmmakers and entrepreneurs all at the same time. ❤️
