Most people think sports photography is about having a long lens.
It’s not.
It’s about timing, positioning, and knowing the game.
I shot this photo at Northeastern University, and here’s what actually made it work:
1. I studied the game before I ever picked up the camera. You have to know where the action is going next. Anticipation beats reaction every time.
2. I locked in on one subject. In sports, everything moves fast. If you try to capture everyone, you miss the moment. Pick your athlete. Track them. Commit.
3. I positioned myself for the story, not just the play. Faces matter. Emotion matters. Celebration, frustration, intensity — that’s what makes the image powerful.
4. I used light to separate the athlete from the background. Even in a busy arena, good positioning creates clean contrast.
5. I took more shots than I needed. Pros don’t rely on one click. They create options.
Here’s the simple formula I use for social media too:
Attention: Start with a bold truth.
Value: Teach something practical.
Proof: Show the actual photo.
Call to action: Invite conversation.
Photography isn’t luck. It’s preparation meeting opportunity.
