In the previous semester, I had the privilege to develop an autobiographical graphic design project under the guidance of Prof.
@giorgio.camuffo . It allowed me to approach design more artistically and to merge conceptual thinking with my passion of sewing.
In contrast to conventional autobiographical mediums, my life is not unveiled through linear storytelling but through physical presence and encounter.
A tailored coat carries more than six thousand photographs: traces of lived moments, people encountered, places passed through. Layered and condensed, the images merge into a dense surface. From a distance, the pattern seems abstract – up close, it fractures into partial scenes, gestures, faces. Memory does not reveal itself at once, but in fragments.
The pattern unfolds in a precise chronology. From hem to collar, time ascends through birth, early childhood, the gradual accumulation of experience, arriving at the present. The body becomes a timeline, the garment a vertical archive.
Autobiography here is not fixed, but negotiable. Twenty-two buttons – each representing one year of my life – allow the wearer to actively decide what is enclosed, what is connected, what is hidden. Time can be fastened or released.
The coat operates as a tool of identity exchange. For a brief moment, the wearer becomes me. Their own visible identity recedes, almost entirely concealed, while mine is carried outward – exposed, unfiltered, unedited.
Through this physical exchange, the project confronts the performative nature of identity in public and social space. It places carefully curated self-representation in tension with radical exposure.
