🎭 “The cast is exceptional" - The British Theatre Guide
With just a week to go until it opens at Wilde Stages, Dublin's Queer Theatre Festival, The BBC’s First Homosexual enters its final stretch of rehearsals. Following a critically acclaimed tour of England, Max Lohan and Mitchell Wilson return to their roles, both previously praised for their versatility and emotional clarity.
In Dublin, they will be joined by Ireland’s Barry McStay for a production that brings a rediscovered 1954 BBC documentary on homosexuality back to life - and a story rooted in queer history and LGBTQ+ lives.

A lost BBC documentary. A rediscovered transcript. A powerful new stage play.
In 1954, the BBC made its first documentary about male homosexuality - so controversial it was banned, shelved for years, and ultimately lost. Only a forgotten transcript survived… until now.
Inkbrew Productions brings this extraordinary piece of queer history to life in The BBC’s First Homosexual, written by Dr Stephen M Hornby and directed by Oli Hurst.
Blending archive material, letters and BBC memos with a moving fictional narrative, the play explores the lived realities of LGBTQ+ people in 1950s Britain - and the lasting impact of conversion therapy.
A gripping production you won’t want to miss.
The BBC’s First Homosexual has been made possible with support from the Arts & Humanities Research Council, Higher Education Funding and Loughborough University.
Don’t miss this critically acclaimed production as it travels from London to Dublin, before arriving at Edinburgh Fringe.

What Is RUM?
Interview with Writer & Performer @joe.mallalieu
“Rum is an insult and a compliment. It describes a good situation and a bad situation. A hilarious story, a terrifying story.“ - Joe

“I think RUM pre-dates the Andrew Tate view point, it’s not born with the rise of social media or an uncertainty of what men should be or how they could grow up like we saw in Adolescence.
“It’s about how working class men have been growing up for generations. I think that’s why it did so well last tour, why we’re bringing it back and also why TV production companies have shown interest.” — Joe Mallelieu, Writer & Actor

Meet Danny, plastering since he was a kid, he’s not scared of anything, he’s RUM.
Danny’s been up all night and now he’s rushing to finish a job before he has to give the speech of his life.
RUM is a darkly humorous and powerful play that wrestles with masculinity, mental health and addiction in the trade.

“Danny feels love and loyalty so deeply and yet the only acceptable way to express it is through destruction and violence.
Now four years later, the play is more relevant than ever. With the rise of the manosphere Danny’s story is happening on a massive scale as young men are learning limiting and hate filled ideas of what a man should be.
I’m thrilled to be bringing such an emotional, funny and politically charged show on a nationwide tour at a time when conversations about masculinity are so badly needed. Danny’s a man who both wears the culture as a badge of honour and suffers within it.” — Tess Seddon, Director
