Lenard Smith (@archivethestudio ) is a Ghanaian-American photographer whose still life tableaux pull from sculpture, architecture, and Black cultural identity. The contents of his assemblages range from photographic equipment and theory, to found objects and detritus, to signifiers of Black identity and culture.

Here are some things I remember about making the Diamond Eyes video for Deftones. The label gave me a watermarked CD that I couldn’t open and because I was too embarrassed to tell them I just wrote a treatment without hearing the song. When I found out I booked it I panicked until I heard the song. I associate this video with the first season of News Radio because I had it on in the background while did the compositing. The guy from System of a Down visited set and accidentally hotboxed me. It was a challenging afternoon after that. The owl in the video was also on those billboards with Conan O Brien if anyone remembers that. #deftones
The Canon XL2 SDI is another project I will be renting out. The camera is paired with a Panasonic recorder that uses FireWire and is also able to convert and output SDI. I’m soft launching a little project I’ve been working on this year. A rigged out box camera I’m calling the #VaricamMini - I love shooting on the original Varicam and wanted to spread the gospel but found that the workflow and footprint were going to be dealbreakers for a modern production.
With the AK-HC1500, I’ve made a special cable to run it off of a Vmount battery and mapped the settings from my Varicam onto the Mini. This camera is CCD, works with B4 zooms and primes and has global shutter.
It’s an excellent choice for getting a 16mm vibe or if you want to reproduce the digital cinema look of the early 2000s. If you want to shoot with me hit me up. My heart hurts for the Mastodon family to hear of Brent’s passing. To be a creative collaborator with the guys has always been a highlight of my life and working with Brent on set was beyond fun. I have some old VTR printouts from him on the set of Oblivion that I take out and look at a couple times a year. I thought he would have been an amazing actor. He was each time I got to work with him. Hell of a singer and musician. God bless Brent Hines and Mastodon and Nick John too.
