DIS//CARDED The trash bag seems to exist only as a functional object, serving no other purpose. We fill it, tie it, and make it disappear. Yet, when we take a step back, the mundane suddenly becomes intriguing. A trash bag is a container for discarded items, revealing what usually stays hidden. In this issue, we will put the overlooked object in the spotlight. A trash bag can be seen as a reflection of someone’s life; it reveals our habits, routines, and even our secrets. What we throw away, what we conceal, and what we carry in those bags tells stories about who we are. Waste is intimate. To view trash as a part of our identity is to hold a mirror up to culture itself. This magazine treats the trash bag as both a subject and a metaphor. On one hand, we closely examine its evolution, materials, and design how something so ordinary is carefully engineered to be strong and disposable. On the other hand, we explore the cultural significance of trash itself. The concept of what is considered “waste” is never fixed; it is a social judgement. One person’s trash can turn into another person’s treasure, whether it’s getting reused, recycled, or picked up by freegans. @britt.buschgens @rozadisselhorst @artch1vst
