Saw The Devil Wears Prada II and wanted to share my own little story. My boss at Vogue gave me these shoes on the last day of my internship. I brought them home in a black car, the kind that waited behind Condé Nast for anyone to call down when they needed a ride, anywhere and for anything. I felt like the coolest and richest person alive even though I wasn’t paid at all and my bosses hardly were. A few years later, I got my first job at Teen Vogue earning $25k, a salary HR told me I should be grateful for. I’m very privileged in a lot of ways but I don’t come from money and I grew up in the suburban South, so I mostly had to find my own connections and save half my lunch for dinner to make it work. And guess what? It did. I did. I’m still in New York and have built a career, life, friends, and a network I’m so proud of. Those early Condé days were weird and fun to say the very least but I’m grateful for all of it.
