I recently sat down with Mark Brodie at KJZZâs âThe Showâ to talk about my travels across the American West writing Grit & Ghosts, about faith healer and supposed revolutionary Teresa Urrea, who lived for a time in Arizona, and what of these stories I carry with me today.
Thank you for having me, @kjzzphoenix@kjzztheshow , I enjoyed sharing these stories with you!
Link to broadcast in bio, my interview comes on at mm 38:55

A morning walk thru the Village and SoHo and all the lovely cafes and books one could ever dream about. Iâve been all over Manhattan this week and wow, so much has changed. But the Village remains happily recognizable in all the ways. Twelve hours on foot is never enough.

Today was the inaugural gathering of Sea Smoke Studios, our neighborhood artist + writers symposium hosted by our very own resident potter. Some painted, some wrote, some sculpted, all the while enjoying the subtle notes of Miles Davis and happy conversation whenever the mood happened to strike. A regular event to be sure! What an amazing group of talented friends! đđ¨đ
Iâm soooooo happy to announce that Nebraska Press Bison Books will be publishing my next book, probably arriving late 2027. Bison Books did such a great job bringing Grit and Ghosts onto the shelves, and I canât wait to see how this next one comes out as well. Details still under wraps, but you know Iâm happiest when Iâm in research-and-writing mode, so this is the golden hour for me â¨đđŤ

Itâs March and that means itâs Womenâs History Month! Itâs a great day to read (or listen đ§) about these tenacious women I spent about two years tracking down as I crisscrossed the American West in 2020-21. Also I write alot about trees.
It was such a joy bringing these stories from Yellowstone National Park to the Sonoran desert to Kansas City (and several stops in between) into the world. Writing GRIT was very much an exercise in walking with ghosts.

â¤ď¸ up-country, Maui, and we spent an incredible morning @oofarm_maui touring the farm and learning about the coffee harvest. Such a beautiful place, in every sense. I know farming is a lot of work, but the place has a truly serene and joyful feeling. Thank you for this beautiful day

Oh the things you find in the archivesâŚ!!! Happy happy research day. Taking a brief respite from 2026 and sinking into the 1920s. Thing about book research is it could never be finishedâŚThereâs always more stuff that I NEED to know đ
