Exploring vessel shapes.. I’ve been using my plastic (party cup) mould to create shapes that can be Paired together to create a closed vessel. I quite like to random combination of structure (moulded on the inside so it takes the cup shape) and organic (moulded on the outside so the structured cup shape is on the hidden inside).
They fight but harmonise at the same time, with a jaunty eccentricity that can be seen flowing through much of Jamaican life. A bit rough and jagged/sharp around the edges, reminding of the need for space in such close intimate surroundings that islands life forces people into.
Goats are my favourite animals so growing up in Jamaica could be traumatic at times.. but I’m glad no goat parts went to waste, on the island as much of the animal was used in many tasty dishes (never eaten goat, but cow foot is another matter 🤣)
Studio experiments with vessel making. I’m using a plastic drinking cup as my mould. For me containers like these take me back to my Caribbean childhood when (disposable) things like plastic cups were kept and reused, carefully washed, stored and brought out for the next parties and gatherings - life was a little tougher and things had a different value. Plastic cups also talk to me about modern party culture, the containers of refreshments, giving hand something to do in the times spent on the dance floor sidelines.
