These images I captured during my hosting of Phil Penman in August 2024, on behalf of Leica Akademie Australia, during his phenomenal two-day workshop. At the time, Tadao Ando’s MPavilion was set to be dismantled at the end of June 2025. However, due to its architectural significance and overwhelming public support, the City of Melbourne voted in June 2025 to extend its stay in Queen Victoria Gardens until 2030. Conceived initially as a five-month installation, the pavilion’s complex concrete structure made relocation difficult. Backed by Naomi Milgrom and several leading architects, the campaign to preserve it marked a rare shift from temporary to permanent. It stands as a tribute to architectural excellence in one of Melbourne’s most iconic green spaces. Tadao Ando said he was “honoured” by the city’s decision. Tadao Ando’s MPavilion Good News! The Melbourne City Council voted to keep Tadao Ando’s MPavilion in Queen Victoria Gardens until 2030. The decision was made just two weeks ago by the Future Melbourne Committee, led by Councillor Philip Le Liu, with a 5-2 vote in favour of a five-year extension. This followed a community-led “Preserve the Pavilion” campaign, supported by over 2,500 signatures, including those of prominent architects such as Álvaro Siza and Jean Nouvel.
