For this porch ceiling in Philadelphia, a highly acclaimed architect selected Black Locust 2 x 10 Nominal Lumber, pre-finished with Robi Oil, to achieve a warm, natural look with long-term durability.
To complete the design, Black Locust Custom-Milled 3 X 3 Caps were created to integrate seamlessly with the structure.

Right on the Atlantic Ocean in Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, a 1968 home remodel turned into something special.
The homeowner discovered Black Locust and Sassafras and decided to use both.
Black Locust 6 X 6 Posts anchor the structure. Black Locust 5/4 X 6 Decking creates the double picture frame border. Black Locust 5/4 X 4 Decking runs through the center with hidden fasteners from @strongtie .
Custom Milled Sassafras Handrails and Stanchions bring warmth and contrast, paired with a sleek cable system from @cablebullet .
The entire perimeter is wrapped in a Black Locust Glulams.
Everything is finished with Robi Oil.

Sassafras deck in progress and this one’s already a standout. We’re decking it with 5/4 Sassafras, a great domestic hardwood that’s naturally rot-resistant, lighter than many exotics, and a budget‑friendly way to get a long‑lasting, high-character deck surface without going full tropical hardwood.
The railing system uses pressure-treated Hemlock Fir 4x4s and 2x4s, which offer longevity comparable to Southern Yellow Pine but with a cleaner look and a beautiful two‑tone contrast between the lighter wood and the darker treatment—tons of character, zero compromise on strength.
Did you know we can also build an entire deck out of pressure-treated Hemlock Fir or pressure-treated Douglas Fir? Both are excellent budget‑friendly alternatives when hardwoods aren’t in the budget, while still standing out from your typical big-box Southern Yellow Pine deck.
