Congratulations to Robert Pluma for being selected for CENTER’s Excellence in Multimedia Storytelling Award recognizing his project, Hidden Histories of San Antonio. @robertpluma@centersantafe
“Hidden Histories of San Antonio is a reclamation of the identity and narrative of my Coahuiltecan Indigenous ancestors – a counter-history to colonial accounts of what is now southern Texas. It will use augmented reality, mesmerizing slow-motion portraiture, and recorded oral histories. It is a deeply personal, research-driven effort to challenge the very notion of history and how much truth we can expect to receive from its authors.”
Congratulations! 🎉

Hortencia Hernandez Guerrero crossed over to the spirit realm in the light of a harvest full moon in Pisces — her sun sign — at the dawn of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in this land never ceded by her, her ancestors, or her descendants.
There could not exist a greater embodiment of quiet ferocity. She listened like no other, her voice never rising above the level required to softly deliver a perfectly timed and devastating remark — though it must be noted that she would often declare, “My body is a weapon,” and once famously accepted a powerful firearm with grace and indifferent elegance from her husband, Victor Vallejo Guerrero, when it became apparent that they may need to defend themselves and the valuable cargo they were transporting.
Her ever-superior wit began to eclipse her physical health after a mostly successful battle with cancer and an epochal pandemic, wielding the twin swords of resilience and determination. Though victorious, she gained a heightened perspective on the limits of our physical bodies, becoming well-prepared to discover What Lies Beyond — to see it with her own eyes, which, miraculously, were, in part, not solely her own following two corneal transplants.
With this new vision, she said to Victor in recent days, his face in her hands, “You need to let me go — and if you don’t, I’ll take you with me.”
Two days later, he was in the hospital, and she joined him there soon after.
Victor, it was revealed, urgently needed what was at first to be a double, then triple, and ultimately quadruple-bypass open heart surgery, performed by a surgeon with Hortencia’s mother’s surname. Had these blockades not been discovered and successfully circumvented — as they were — he may not be here with us now, after recovering faster than anyone expected, already home and insisting on preparing his own meals.
Always and forever a most powerful bruja, Hortencia focused her magic away from her beloved garden and cocina toward a peaceful transformation not delivered, but summoned on her own terms, and only once she was fully ready to embrace a new form of her perennial role as loving protector. …[1/3]

So incredibly happy to finally share a months-long secret: I’ve been named a Magnum Foundation Grantee!
My project, Hidden Histories of San Antonio, is receiving the Photography in Collaboration – Religion and Migration Grant. With this work, I’m uncovering stories about my indigenous ancestors and our process of colonization, and can now further develop it in ways which otherwise would not have been possible.
My deep appreciation to @magnumfoundation – with a special shout-out to @noelleflorestheard , who is administering this grant – and the @henrylucefoundation , this grant’s supporting partner.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way. It means a lot to be a part of this community of caring and talented people.
Now back to the work!

England lost. This person in the center was distraught and decided it was okay to grab at my phone + face right after this image was made. #colonialism #becky #futbol #worldcup #englandfootball
I’m back in NYC after being away for two months. Available for assignments, commercial work, and maybe even general socializing.
