Obligatory ā€œI moved back to the gorge and kayaking the little white is my only personalityā€ pic. Actually very thankful to be back here, feel welcomed by the community, and be able to paddle at the level I want to. Bless šŸ™ šŸ“ø: @jonpjoy

Big updates! I’ve been really busy lately, as anyone who has tried to plan something with me can attest to. Headwaters is now a team of 4! Proud to be a small business that also offers health, dental & accident insurance to our employees. These boys have been working hard and learning a ton, and I’m stoked to see where they’re going to go with it. Also, our website is all done! Link is in my bio and on my business page @headwaters_carpentry . Website design by @michaelakayaks who has poured a ton of time into it and absolutely nailed what I was looking for. We’re still adding small updates here and there, but please give us some critical feedback on it and share with anyone interested in working with us on high-performance home building. Haven’t been boating or doing much besides studying & working this winter & spring, but it’ll all pay off one day. Besides, swinging hammers is fun šŸ”ØšŸ”ØšŸ§°

thanks for all the birthday love! Celebrated 32 with @jonpjoy @lauren.danilek and @trailsmag in Bellingham, then bombed up to one of my favorite places to ski to try to salvage this season. Unfortunately the snowpack is skitz as right now, but we were able to get high enough yesterday in some pretty incredible light for @jonpjoy to get this shot of me remembering how to make turns in front of Mt. Sir Donald. Bless šŸ™

COLCA CANYON pt 2: Lunar canyon The Upper Colca ends in Canco. Where tf is Canco? Nobody knows. We were very stoked, however, when the Rio Mamacocha doubled our CFS on day 3. It was a welcome relief from the low volume, though exciting, mank of the upper. Tight gorges and massive sieve piles gave way to class 4 big water, and only two easy portages after the 14 heinous ones upstream. It’s also one of the most geologically stunning places I’ve been- every bend in the river revealed some wild tectonic deformation. If you’re looking for a chill, stunning overnighter, this section fits the bill. I’m really glad we did the upper, since it was a really fulfilling mission, but the Lunar canyon was pure fun. Beware the sieve-y stout mid-run…she goes, but she’s hungry 🦈🦈🐊

COLCA CANYON pt 1: the upper The colca canyon is the deepest canyon in the world. Or maybe South America. Or maybe it’s the second deepest canyon in Peru. Depends on which source you ask. It took the CanoAndes crew (of Godspeed, Los Polacos fame) 11 days to do the upper section (from Sangalle to Canco) during the first descent. We only needed two and a half days, but it was the most physical couple days I’ve had on a river trip. 14 portages with loaded boats over massive boulders, around gigantic sieves, across steep scree slopes and a throw-n-go had us dogged by the end. I can’t imagine doing it in a raft and fiberglass boats. We hadn’t exactly planned on doing the upper, but some miscommunication about where the put-in was meant running this section that ā€œhas very little water and not enough to merit paddling itā€ during the dry season. It felt low, but that made it easier to eddy hop through the boulder piles and portage only when absolutely necessary. So much for the ā€œ3-7 portagesā€ we read about online. Despite the mank, boat shoulderin’, and lack of good campsites (we had to huddle on 20 sq ft of sand at one point), it was an extremely worthwhile experience for the geology alone. Did I mention the geysers? Big shoutout to Nicky and Rachel for staying stoked throughout the sufferfest and our dwindling food supply. Good partners make a big difference on expeditions. Part 2 next!

On the way home from a packed two weeks in Peru. Paddled the two deepest canyons in South America, met some alpacas/llamas/vicuƱas (no guanacos 😢), drank hella pisco sours, spent 30% of our time getting our bones rattled on mountain roads, and bonded hard w/ @rachelfly_ and @silvertips_23 through the 16 portages of the Colca canyon. Shoutout to @alonsocampanaa for hosting us at his sick house in the sacred valley and showing us down the Urubamba. I’ll be back to visit you for more. Can’t forget @vam_montes and Sue either! The best shuttle drivers in the country. Was always a relief to see Victor at the takeout with cold cusqeuƱas. Thanks for bringing your boyfriends to Peru, Ray #didyouknowthatsadarkbeer #3to7portagesmyass #ithinkthisistheuppercolca I’ll post more about the Colca later. What an insane place.

WURL attempt numba 1 ended 19 hours in, at the saddle between white baldy and the pfeifferhorn. Winds were ripping on the ridge, the third rainstorm of the day was moving in, and I hadn’t been able to force any food down in a couple hours. Pretty stoked on what I learned though, and how to adjust my training for the next attempt. At least next time I won’t be onsighting half the route! Huge thanks to the support team, @dbotski @barmski and especially @jacksonschor for all the beta, and coming up to meet me at 2 am for a resupply only to hike all the way back down the same route when I decided pushing on wasn’t going to be fun anymore and borderline dangerous. And of course @katie.orr8 for convincing me to try this thing in the first place + delivering snacks, stoke & water at Catherine pass. Just gonna have to give’r next year instead. Ready for skiing & kayaking and less running now 🄵 #wurlwemakeit #notthistime

@wyn0tt and I went and knocked out the Tatoosh traverse a few weekends ago. Felt good to get redemption on it after getting our asses kicked a few years ago. It’s not an easy day mission, with 12 peaks in 12 miles and ~13,000 feet of vert followed by a half marathon back to the car after tagging Stevens. Great day of peakbagging though, if you want something that’s not quite a run and not quite a scramble. Blueberries are still popping off up high too šŸ«šŸ˜‹ #youlooklikeacivilwargeneral #nomilfsthistime
