The advice nobody wants to hear when you’re desperate to find a job: apply to fewer jobs. I know it sounds backwards, but when I sat down with Adrienne Hunt, a recruiter with 20 years at @roberthalf the picture she painted of what’s actually happening on the hiring side made it click. The logic of ā€œget your resume in front of as many people as possibleā€ only works if there’s a person on the other end with time to read it. And right now, applications are so flooded with resumes because of all the AI tools that enable instant applying, that there isn’t. So flooding the zone doesn’t get you more chances, because there’s just no way to prepare truly high quality applications… to hundreds of jobs. It mostly just gets you filtered out faster. The candidates getting calls are the ones who made it easy for an exhausted hiring manager to immediately connect the dots. That’s a very different goal than ā€œapply to everything and hope something sticks,ā€ and honestly, it’s a more solvable one. Adrienne shared so many nuggets of wisdom in our session.
