The DC premiere of THE INHERITANCE, two plays, six acts, and a combined seven hour length, ran for 60 performances over ten wonderful weeks. Now back in LA after five months away, I’ve been reflecting on the life-changing experience over that time being part of such a stunning production of two exquisite plays with an amazing team of folks creating its unforgettable expression. My heartfelt thanks to our phenomenal, visionary director @tom.story.75 for trusting me to play the deeply complicated Henry Wilcox. (And to @danamboyer for your part in that!) I love Henry and all his flaws and could keep going deeper with him. To @brittajoypeterson , our movement director/choreographer, for her vital contribution to the show’s cohesion, flow, and beauty. Thank you especially to my incredible fellow actors (and my main compatriot @davidfgow in particular). I’m forever grateful for this journey with you all. Because we were the first all queer cast (plus dear Nancy Robinette!) of this show, there was something that happened in our initial read, table work, and discussion about the importance of these plays. It’s as if a pact was made between us to give our whole selves to this undertaking at a depth that’s not easy to explain. I love you all and look forward to the next time we get to adventure together. To @ryanrilette and @sarahbcooney (and all the @roundhousetheatre team) for producing and helping cast this show and make it happen in this theatre with this group of people at this time in history in such an unforgettable way. To @che.wernsman , @juancarlos__contreras , @carrieedick , and the whole stage production crew. You all were invaluable, the best of the best. And, last, but definitely not least, thank you to @matthewmichaellopez for writing these magnificent plays and telling a vital part of our collective story as gay people. You created one of those rare works that will stand the test of time. Grateful for our discussions about Henry as well. THE INHERITANCE at Round House Theatre was a transformational journey at every level, a rare opportunity that doesn’t come along often, and I’m forever changed by it. I can’t wait for the next one. 📸 @margotschulman

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Thank you for everything, far more than I could say here, as I’ve shared with you over the years. I love you always. And to all the moms out there (and on behalf of those no longer with us in physical form). Wishing you all a beautiful day honoring you. You’re all extraordinary. 💐

Coming across these shots from our film “Milada” in the midst of the current political climate feels poignant. Released a number of years ago by Netflix, “Milada” tells the story of Czech heroine Milada Horáková and the fight for freedom and democracy in the face of Nazi and then Communist uprisings and rule. Shot entirely in and around Prague, it was nominated for ten Czech Lion Awards. Milada was powerfully portrayed by @ayeletzurer and passionately championed by writer/producer/director @davidmrnka . My writing partner @rjconant and I worked on the script, and I helped produce and played Milada’s husband Bohuslav. Very grateful to have gotten to be a part of this film about such an extraordinary woman. Especially in times like today, Milada’s heroism continues to be a beacon of hope and light for countless people as it has for many decades. #Milada #Prague #CzechRepublic #Netflix #Democracy #Freedom

There’s a sobriety dad joke for turning 21 years sober that says something about it being legal to drink again. Silly, yes, but, along with the dedicated commitment one makes to the journey, ultimately recovery is about enjoying life, living it as fully as possible. I’m thankful to be present for the highs and lows, the joys and the challenges, in a way that wasn’t possible before. It’s hard to describe some of the gifts of sobriety because they’re internal, they’re felt. But suffice it to say that I couldn’t be more grateful to be sober and to get to walk alongside so many extraordinary fellows. Much love and onward.

In August 2002, I came out publicly in THE ADVOCATE magazine. It changed my life for the better forever. National Coming Out Day (on Saturday) and LGBTQ History Month brought it to mind — especially after realizing that 23 years ago qualifies as history! And, as I see and read about the young actors who are now working and living openly, I’m moved deeply to recognize how far we’ve come to this point. For those considering coming out — or who are somewhere on the journey to doing that, step by step — there’s no way really to explain the change in feeling that happens when we go from living in hiding to living in the open as who we really are. It’s not easy to describe the freedom, the sense of ease, the increase in energy, once spent concealing ourselves, that is then available for the rest of life. But trust me that it’s real. And powerful. And, very often, it’s followed by the thought, “Oh, this was less of a big deal than I thought it would be. Why didn’t I do it sooner?“ Of course, I say this emphasizing that safety always comes first. Contrary to how it’s often described, coming out isn’t really one moment or one act but rather a series of moments in our lives throughout which we continually take one more step into truth. What’s the one small step you can take now that will move you further into that truth and that freedom? Happy National Coming Out Day (and week!) and National LGBTQ History Month. Much more to come on our journey together. Looking forward to it. #NationalComingOutDay #LGBTQHistoryMonth #Freedom #BestGayLife
