Our Design Director, Russell Whitehead, recently took part in the @nlalondon Tall Building Conference 2026, exploring how tall buildings in London can be better future-proofed in the face of evolving regulation and rising sustainability expectations.
The conference brough industry together for a morning of insight and debate on the future of high-rise living - and the role of retrofit, innovation and design-led approaches to extend the life and value of existing buildings.
Russell contributed a design-led engineering perspective, drawing on Robert Bird Group's experience delivering complex high-rise and dense urban developments, including One Leadenhall where the conference was held.

Delivering major developments above live rail infrastructure demands careful coordination, technical precision and a strong focus on buildability.
At One Liverpool Street, a new ten-storey commercial development designed by Eric Parry Architects, we supported the delivery of high-quality office and retail space directly above London Underground and Elizabeth Line tunnels in one of the City’s most constrained locations.
Working alongside John F Hunt Group and Mace, our team provided Design for Delivery expertise, helping simplify key construction interfaces and reduce risk across this complex site.

A few weeks ago, we shared the story of 41 McLaren Street’s transformation. Today, we’re taking you below ground to explore one of the most complex aspects of the project: the basement works.
Excavating 1.5 metres below the original slab-on-grade while the concrete frame above remained in service required bespoke underpinning and propping solutions. Steel transfer beams were installed to support open spaces like the auditorium and gymnasium, ensuring structural integrity while enabling new functionality.
Adaptive reuse is one of the most powerful strategies for reducing environmental impact. At 41 McLaren Street, 81% of the final structure was retained from the existing structure, massively reducing the demolition waste and embodied carbon compared to a new build.
As CJ Wilson, RBG’s Sustainability Specialist, explains:
“Traditional construction is linear: take, make, waste. Concrete and steel production make up 12% of global emissions. By using the materials that are already there, we can avoid these impacts.”
This approach avoided unnecessary resource consumption, maintained cultural connections, and extended the building’s life by another 50 years – all while creating a future-ready learning environment.
🎥 Explore the project’s sustainability story in our latest video.

🔋 Collie BESS – Stage 1, WA
One of Australia’s largest grid-scale batteries, storing energy for peak demand and supporting the shift to renewables.
RBG’s role:
• Access roads + bridge design
• Structural foundations + steelwork
• Grading, drainage + retention basins
• BIM + automated pile coordination
⚡ 4 hours of energy storage
🌱 Grid stability + cleaner power
👏 Big effort from our NSW+ACT team!
41 McLaren Street in North Sydney has been transformed from a 1970s Harry Seidler-designed commercial building into a world-class K–12 educational campus for Reddam House North Shore.
Working with Built., Robert Bird Group delivered structural, civil, and construction engineering solutions that preserved the building’s heritage while creating modern learning spaces, including science labs, performance areas, and a contemporary library.
This $30M adaptive reuse project demonstrates how collaboration and innovation can breathe new life into a heritage icon.

Congratulations to Nikola Najdovski, the recipient of our 2025 ANZ Spirit of Excellence Impact Award!
Niko recently completed our two-year graduate program, and this award recognizes his outstanding contributions over the course of his time in the program. He joined RBG in 2023 as an undergraduate student whilst completing a double degree in Civil Engineering and Business at the University of Sydney.
His advice to future graduates? “You will learn a lot more on the job than you realise. If you enjoy technical engineering, this is one of the best places to be. The work we do is very rewarding and challenging.”
Congratulations, Niko! Your curiosity, technical skill, and collaborative approach embody what makes RBG exceptional.
