Thank you, @urbanworldff !!! It was an amazing festival! We screened for a sold out house of beautiful people, Stew and Heidi played live, and Alec Karakatsanis, Nick Turner, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams gave our audience food for thought around pretrial detention and bail. We are thrilled to be in the company of so many terrific filmmakers and to be so honored. Congrats to lead animator Thomas Curtis as well as Julia Chien and Barry Bruner for their searing work!
I’m honored and thrilled to share that Criminal, our animated musical documentary short film, is going to have its New York premiere at the UrbanWorld Film Festival on November 16th at 5pm in theater 12 at the Regal Union Square cinema.
It’s going to be a great night to see it because not only will we show the film, but our incredible musicians, “Stew” Stewart and Heidi Rodewald (Passing Strange, The Negro Problem, She’s Gotta Have It), will also play live! The terrific organizers of the festival have given the film its own program, so we’ll watch it, do a brief Q&A, then Stew and Heidi will close it out.
Stew, Heidi, and our super talented animator, Thomas Curtis (Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project), were able to depict the devastating system of locking people up before trial with music, animation and the words of people held in Houston’s Harris County Jail.
We’re all looking forward to sharing this work live before The New Yorker publishes it next year. Please get your tickets as soon as you can, as UrbanWorld is a remarkable film festival that fills up almost as fast as shows performed by Stew and Heidi.
Tickets and more info can be found in my bio (you have to scroll down to the “Criminal” thumbnail, then click on it to get to the film’s page). Check out the other films while you’re there! We’re so proud to be part of this incredible lineup!
