The best time of year to elope in Ireland is… In truth after shooting over 300 elopements with couples flying here from the USA the real answer is that it depends. Ireland is great all year round and each season has its perks. Summer is the warmest time, but the busiest. Winter is the coldest time but the quietist. Spring & fall are probably the best middle ground on the warm vs cold or busy vs quiet. One thing to also consider is the long days of summer vs short days in winter. Summer means a lovely lazy morning, hair and makeup starting around 2pm. Prep shots around 4pm. Ceremony 5/6pm then exploring until 10pm for sunset & blue hour with lanterns. Hitting the pub approaching 11pm. Winter is a much shorter day so it’s all starting around 9am and wrapping up in the pub around 4pm. Both have their advantages. Winter makes getting restaurants/food options for when your done a lot simpler. My advice after more than 12 years of helping couples plan their dream elopement is don’t get too bogged down in which time of year and just plan it based on what works best for your schedules & work. Can US couples get married legally in Ireland/Northern Ireland? Yes you can. In reality most of my couples choose not to go the legal route in the end simply because it is so much easier to pop into the local courthouse before they fly out and tick that box for the government. Also it can be good way to include family if you’re eloping here by yourselves. Lots of my couple take a handful of their close relatives & friends with them to the courthouse and then head out for dinner in a nice restaurant. It’s a nice way for your family to feel they are included without having the bill of hiring a wedding venue. Here’s a few frames from Jessica & Maeson’s elopement in Northern Ireland. Ireland elopement photographer here. Joe and Lia flew from Baltimore 🇺🇸 to elope on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast — and this is what happened. 🍀🍀🍀 Lia grew up going to big weddings. She knew what was expected. For a long time, choosing something different felt selfish. They eloped above Dunluce Castle, moved through Elephant Rock, Dunseverick, and Giants Causeway as the sun dropped, and came back to a private chef waiting at the eco lodge that evening. When I asked her afterward what she’d say to the version of herself who was still unsure, she said: “This is a time in your life where it’s okay to be selfish. Northern Ireland Elopement Planning can be done real fast or a slow as you want. My record from a U.S based couple booking in to eloping is 13 days. I know I could do it quicker if needed, it’s more the travel side of things that takes time. Most couples book in 6-12 months out and I have some couples that book in 2 years in advance because they want to make sure they get their date. There are pros and cons to all the lead times, longer obviously isn’t rushed but it also means you have to wait for ages. Shorter means you have less options on dates as my diary is so busy but if you’re flexible that doesn’t matter. Lindsay & Andrew has a 15 month lead time up to their amazing elopement on the Causeway Coast. These guys had an absolute ball with their closest loved ones in for the ride! It really was fun to watch these two enjoy every moment of their 2 days elopement experience. It was great to team up with Clive from @pigmintfilm_clive on video. Wedding and elopement vows can feel a bit daunting, I’ve had couples like John & Cecie who decided that they would prefer to exchange handwritten letters on a cliff top in the final light of day. I’ve documented hundreds of weddings & elopement ceremonies over the years and I still remember this moment being electric. There was just an emotional energy as these guys sat at the end of an incredibly beautiful day and quietly wept as they read each others letters. Northern Ireland elopements in spring and fall are something else. The wind adds drama. The skies shift constantly, giving you lighting that just doesn’t exist in summer. The landscape looks exactly how you imagined Ireland would look when you were still dreaming about coming here. If you’re flexible on timing, these are the seasons I’d point you toward every time. The crowds are gone, the light is doing things it won’t do in July, and everywhere you stand feels like it was made for this. Moody and cinematic is kind of the whole point. When you get to Ireland for the first time one of the first things you’re going to notice is the green. This is the chlorophyll capital of the world. Of the 300+ American couples I’ve helped elope here I can’t think of one that didn’t bring up the green. It takes stunning scenery to another level. One of the great things about our cool/mild climate is that it stays green year round. Northern Ireland elopement planning has only one challenge and that is trying to narrow down the locations you want to explore!
