WED 3rd SEPT - SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE & RICHARD YOUNGS With Time is Glass, Six Organs of Admittance is captured once again in the intricate tangle of the fretboards, soaring in open skies above. Like lens flare cutting through the speakers; spider webs cracking the windshield that holds back all the onrushing reality. Blowing the dust away, cutting a new path for cognition. As is always endeavored.... After 20 years of living on the road in different places, Six Organs of Admittance had returned home to Humboldt County — a far country, to some, but still part of the world through which creatures of all kinds are moving through and contributing to. And some of them are human. Alone together—forming connection and exchange out of thought and expression—no different from the people on the other side of the Redwood Curtain. It was there, where Six Organs had long ago emerged, in the name of everything cycling, of circles that spiral concentrically and remain unbroken, the new music was conceived. In moments, it was as if the future had some how wrapped around 360 degrees; elsewhere, the systems and patterns inside the writing and recording only became evident later—like a recognition that cumulus and nimbus clouds which passed through the sky the day before contained familiar shapes. Informing the songs accordingly as he went, Ben picked up on modes both musical and lyrical, threading backward through the time of Six Organs of Admittance. Almost marinating in it as a way of life. Working on the music and the vocals, then spending some time with them while stepping away from them. Walking the dog and coming back to them. Time is Glass is made of that kind of time. Alone time.

9th July; Pumice, Richard Youngs, Christopher Thomas Failure @theoldhairdressers ... tickets on sale now Since the early 1990's, Aotearoa / New Zealander, Stefan Neville has recorded and performed iconoclastic pieces of broken & repurposed pop song as Pumice. He delicately smears together droning NZ folk, jangly Pakeha blues & scorched Pacific skiffle. Usually performed on multiple instruments at once, with a security blanket of grot & tape saturation through crumbling shitty speakers. Stefan is an active participant in NZ underground music communities. He has collaborated with Kraus, Chris Knox / Tall Dwarfs, Coolies, Hermione Johnson, The Renderers, C.J.A, Ducklingmonster, Antony Milton, Campbell Kneale, Greg Malcolm, Gfrenzy & Witcyst, as well as international contemporaries like Jandek, Anla Courtis, Richard Youngs & Les Harrys. Stefans music has been released on Soft Abuse Records, Feeding Tube Records, Fordamning Arkiv, Planam, Horn Of Plenty, Root Don Lonie For Cash, Ultra Eczema & his own Stabbies Etc label. He facilitates an experiential & spontaneous music making program for people with disabilities in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland called Māpura Music. His visual art practice is just as rotten & playful as his music. “Everything Pumice owns is broken. Virgin audience members at his shows might think he is fucking up till half-way through when it becomes clear they are witnessing a perfect solo ballet of mini-cassettes, modified guitar, foot-pedal drum-kit & short-circuiting spring reverb croon. Deep into a genius career, Pumice still surprises with his subtle mastery of broke-down sounds, slowed-down Magic Band rhythms, crumbling chord organ hymns & tragic ballads that reach deep into the very soul of Aotearoa / New Zealand anti-pop pop music.”– Glenn Donaldson

DRAINOLITH< L< The Blue Kanues Saturday 28th June 🥁🎸💥👽 @theoldhairdressers tickets on sale now!!! Drainolith is Alexander Moskos, best known as first-chair guitar in the formalist rock group AIDS Wolf but also a member of Montreal’s forward thinking electronic music scene. For this show he'll be joined by Gretchen (Guttersnipe) and Sydney from ace Welsh-language, goth-psych-rock group, Tristwch Y Fenywod to make a trio. With Drainolith, Moskos is finally in the realm of song-form, albeit with a polyrhythmic undertow and woozy vocal style. All of Drainolith’s material is performed live, with no backing tapes, samplers sequencers or arpeggiators. Moskos plays foot triggered drum synths, keyboard or guitar and modified cross-patched disco mixers. New album; MACBETH L are a disassociated non-music trio based around the writings of card magician Jack Paton. Jack is joined by Laurie Pitt and Jack Mellin. Listen to their album Marilyn Monroe - All of Us Blue Kanues have been playing around Glasgow on and off over the last 4 years and are about to begin recording their debut album. The band features Mattie on drums, Hannah on bass guitar, Laura on lead guitar and vocals and Isobel on vocals and guitar. They play songs written by Isobel and show influences ranging from metal and hard rock to more dreamscape sounds and indie rock.

ERIC CHENAUX playing this Friday 6th June at Old Hairdressers with Louis Laurian and Lene Otis Finn... going to be an amazing line up!!! Eric Chenaux is one of Canada's most respected and long-standing experimental guitar players and songwriters, starting with legendary Toronto punk band Phleg Camp in the early 90s and tirelessly expanding his musical vocabulary and reach in countless improv, avant-folk, damaged jazz and contemporary music ensembles throughout the 2000s. Since 2006, Constellation has been home to Chenaux's more overtly song-based work, his clear voice and erudite lyricism guided by an utterly unique guitar technique and a deep immersion in pop and folk traditions from medieval to post-modern. Following the release of Eric Chenaux’s last album Say Laura (2022), The Guardian wrote “the Canadian songwriter has one of the all-time great singing voices in popular music, an intensely romantic Chet Baker-ish instrument that seems to float with piercing direction, like a paper aeroplane thrown hard through mist.” With Uncut describing his songcraft “as delicate and lovely as a rare orchid” and Record Collector praising the album’s “sublime alien balladry” such are the accolades that have accrued to Chenaux’s unique and consummately uncompromising solo music for well over a decade now.

The Fantastic @louis_laurain playing this Fri 6th June with Eric Chenaux and Lene Otis Finn... The Old Hairdressers Cornet solo that combines repetitive rhythm, DIY mutes, small percussion and bird calls stuck into the pipes. I started working on this new set during the first months of the pandemic, mostly outdoors because I couldn't work at home. The idea caught on and I made a first live version in August 2020, in forest. Since then I've been playing this set in all types of places : bars, nature, parties, large resonant spaces, people's homes, and hip places of the experimental music scene such as Café Oto, Sonic Protest, Echos, Instants Chavirés... "There are no animations to accompany Louis Laurain's solo but the extended technique lends itself to imagined visual equivalent in its synchronicity with the noise of everyday life. At some point the battlefield gameshow come to mind. With cartoon explosions as the cornet enters his death throes " Deborah Nash, The Wire.

@premrock live tonight at The Old Hairdresser's with support from @boosterhooch ... gonna be a really great show! Did You Enjoy Your Time Here…? is the new studio album from Backwoodz Studioz artist PremRock (perhaps best known as ½ of ShrapKnel; the sobering yin to Curly Castro’s furious yang). DYEYTH picks up where Prem’s pensive Backwoodz debut, 2021’s Load Bearing Crow’s Feet, left off; clear-eyed, heartfelt, and unsparingly witty. The album boasts production from Sebb Bash, Blockhead, YUNGMORPHEUS, Child Actor, Controller 7, ELUCID, Small Professor, Jeff Markey, & Fines Double while Prem’s longtime collaborator Willie Green weaves everything together. Lyrically Prem is aided and abetted by some of the world’s best, Pink Siifu, billy woods, Cavalier, Nappy Nina, Illogic, AJ Suede, Mary Esther Carter and of course Castro. Each guest extracts the best out of the mixture and producing fruitful collaborations not merely guest verses. Featuring original artwork inspired by the record from Chicago artist Gabe Karagianis. The best turns of phrase are the ones that provide more than one meaning. Like staring at an abstract painting, words can mean different things to different people. A question or phrase that either elicits an extended existential pondering or simply a shrug. Could be in reference to the entirety of one’s life, spending 90 minutes in an establishment or 5 years in a romantic relationship. The brief exhilarating high of a designer drug, or the automated survey at the end of an online transaction. It is a simple but stealthily loaded question. Well, did you?
