Grand Finale.... Feathered Friday edition 156 features the Merlin, a small, fierce falcon that is still used extensively in falconry and was once called the Ladyhawk. Merlins prey upon songbirds and shorebirds using ambush tactics and have been observed working in tandem... 1 bird flushing the quarry with the other arriving a few seconds later to take advantage of the created confusion. Prey is almost always taken on the wing during a high-speed pursuit. Merlins do not build their own nests as they take over old nests from hawks and crows etc. 1 brood of 4-5 is raised annually. Parents are monogamous during the breeding season, but most find new mates the following year. Merlins can live in excess of 10 years. This is the 3rd anniversary of Feathered Friday. I have posted a different bird each and every week without fail for the last 3 years in hopes of imparting a bit of knowledge and awareness about these beautiful creatures. I hope you have enjoyed.
