So I'm doing a project here in Spain based on the guitar player, because yes, I play the guitar... Although it's a relatively new subject in my 'professionnel' art practice, I've been making images of musicians for years, for the visuals to accompany my old band - posters, animated music videos and record covers. In fact, most of the techniques I use in my work I usually tried them out first with a graphic for a show or a release. Here's a photo of me still playing away in the studio on my trusty National resonator guitar (sound on to hear it on a recording) and then I thought I'd share some images of the visuals used for our various records, between 2017-2023 : 2. My first ever 'paper marquetry' collage for our first demo CD 3. A stone lithograph print for our second demo 4. Collages for our 45 rpm vinyl single, front and back 5. Cut out photos for our EP cover 6. Hand printed woodblock for the album 'I Don't Know' 7. Self portrait as a ghost for 'Le Père Lachaise Blues' All these records can be listened to via the link in my bio, where you can also find the posters and the music videos I made. And of course, various pictures of us in action, back in the day, can be seen on @robmilesetlesclesanglaises I miss the band, but I'm enjoying what I'm doing now, and trying to make time to keep writing and recording new songs, so hopefully I'll manage to have a new musical chapter to share with you before too long... Meanwhile, pictures and sculptures of guitar players! . . #guitarplayer #albumcover #nationalguitars

Guitarrista II, 2025, Painted wood, 25 x 25 x 17 cm A sculpture in itself, and also the matrix/template/stencil for various print-painting and drawing variations (see previous posts). Up to now these works are relatively small, and individual, and upright, but in the next chapter of experiments I want to try larger, multiple figure pieces that could be stood several different ways up... we'll see! #guitarplayer

Monoprints ! Having tried making print images WITH my sculptures, I also thought about making print images OF the sculptures, so had a day in the print studio exploring different techniques and textures to make a scene of these two figures in musical conversation, and here's the various results. I explain a little about the technique of monoprints in my previous post of the equestrian statue of Velazquez, but in the case of this little series, I was particularly excited by the new effect I found, with the ink that accumulated in the edges of the paper stencils ; that if I re printed the acetate plate once the stencils were removed, it gave me these thin lines that look digital, or like a CAD wire model - see picture 4 and 13. This is definitely something I'll think about developing further in future monoprints... I love this process, between drawing, painting, collage and printing, the possibilities are vast! Guitarrista I, 2025, painted wood, 25 x 25 x 17 cm The first sculpture I made here in Madrid, based on various drawings from observation made in the Spanish Peñas and Tablaos. The sculpture comes apart into flat shapes which I used to print from by hand, using acrylic paint, like a stamp, using the flat surface and also the edges of the pieces to 'write' corresponding rhythms. I also used the pieces to draw around like a template or stencil, as you'll see in and amongst the photos on this post - and have a look at my previous post for 'proper' photos of the printed variations.

Have a swipe through this lot - variations on a theme : print painting partitions : plantillas de guitarrista A series of experiments made using the individual pieces of cut-out wood that assemble to form a 3D sculpture, to print with using paint, like stamps, or draw around with pencil, on canvas or on paper. I used the silhouette forms to compose on tab-like grids and used the edges of the pieces to 'write' an accompanying score... A coming together of multiple influences and references, and an attempt to find a space between mediums, between languages, the drawing of the writing of a music for the eyes. 1. Guitarrista III, 2025, Painted wood, 23 x 17 x 17 cm. This is one of my first 'proper' sculptures, which is the main intention of my project to develop here at the Casa de Velázquez. It is held together with little wooden batons, so it is stable but can come apart and be used to make prints from the separate flat pieces - such as the series of monoprints (posted previously), or drawings, such as slide 7 : Plantilla de Guitarrista III, 2025, watercolour graphite on paper, 21 x 26 cm Slides 8-10 are a little woodcut test (11 x 12.5 cm) I made, from a drawing of the sculpture, to try out the tools and techniques for some larger woodcuts of luthiers... now in progress! #printmaking #sculpture #guitarrista

Taller Uno con Kiki en el Casa de Velázquez (día y noche), 2026, acrylic on canvas, 150 x 80 (X2). I had the pleasure and privilege to share a studio with the mighty @shengqikong for the first few months of this residency. The beautiful and disquieting theatre of her sculptures, as well as the big window with an autumnal view of the garden inspired me to make a portrait of our temporary shared setup, and the play of shadows across the wall when turning out the light and leaving at night prompted an accompanying nocturnal version. . #artiststudio #nondimensional #multiperspective #dayandnight #windowview
