Thanks to old/new/internet friends for coming out last night. I’m really proud of the show and the work - including that of @blueswiftframers . Also grateful to @rawlinsonmark for the exhibition text and of course the lovely team @lbfcontemporary for making it happen. Whilst there are a range of locations, in many ways it’s all one project and interesting to see people unable to differentiate between Margate and the USA - the stories of these spaces are often so similar. I think I’ll be doing a talk during Photo London so will update here in case anyone’s interested. The show runs until 28th May, so please check it out if you can 💜.

16 years ago I was invited for a tour around (the then closed) Dreamland by The Dreamland Trust. It was a bit sad, but we knew good things were happening in Margate. Turner Contemporary opened a year later and Dreamland 4 years after that. I wasn’t really thinking of making a project at that time but the access seemed like a gift. Since then my work at the coast has become my practice, rather than a series of projects. I’m giving a free talk/gallery tour about my work next week - link in bio.

‘For Ball, this investigation feels deeply personal. Having holidayed on the Costas as a child in the 1980s and now living on the Kent coast, he returns to these coastal resorts as a working-class observer: at once connected by history yet critically distant as a photographic visitor. These photographs are not sneering; they avoid stereotyping or taking cheap shots at those enjoying mass-market recreation: the package holiday, the all-inclusive deal. Ball’s meditative approach to image-making, influenced by the New Topographics landscape photographers of the 1970s, stands in stark contrast to many documentary photography projects. One can detect in these photographs the sharp, analytical eye of Lewis Baltz or the Bechers, combined with the more empathetic gaze of Robert Adams. The result is a series of works built on affection and respect, but without nostalgia or naivety.’
