🐐 25 years ago today: Slipknot released the single "The Heretic Anthem," off their most brutal album to date, 'Iowa.' While Slipknot's self-titled 1999 debut announced a unique new force in the world of heavy music, the Nine's sophomore offering is where the masked Midwesterners solidified their presence as something singular and bigger than the fleeting popularity of the late Nineties/early aughts nu-metal explosion. And they did so with a little help from Conan O'Brien, on whose show the band had previously made their network TV debut in 2000. A year later, on the August 10th, 2001, episode of 'Late Night With Conan O’Brien' — just weeks before the release of 'Iowa' — all nine Slipknot members took America by storm, headbanging in unison and spitting out "The Heretic Anthem," on which frontman Corey Taylor claims, "If you're 555, I'm 666!" Historically, 555 is used to signify divinity and wholeness in creation; juxtaposing it with 666, commonly considered as symbolic of Satan, the singer takes on the role of the demonic hero on the song. Live on O'Brien's stage, he and his bandmates played out this role with abandon and conviction. Adding fuel to fire was the comedian’s introduction with the half-joking disclaimer: "May God help us all."

"One mutilation under God!" Motionless in White released the single "Slaughterhouse" featuring Knocked Loose's Bryan Garris on this day in 2022. “Slaughterhouse” is one of MIW’s most recent triumphs, and while a good deal of that has to do with the general heaviness the band bring to the track, part of the thrill obviously also has to do with how Garris brings one of the most fucked-up screeches in the game to the piece. The team-up finds both Chris Motionless and Garris positively seething over the greed of the one percent (“Whatcha gonna buy with all your money in Hell?”), while they howl of the people’s revenge above a firestorm finale. A collab so nice, they did it twice: Knocked Loose returned the favor by bringing Chris onto Knocked Loose's imposing 2024 sequel “Slaughterhouse 2.”

Slipknot released the single "Duality" on this day in 2004. Like the song itself, the music video is an instant classic — capturing the destruction of a house that, as it turns out, was not actually supposed to be destroyed at all. The visceral, violent clip was directed by Tony Petrossian and filmed in Slipknot's hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, about 10 minutes from drummer Joey Jordison's house. "A band like us is really grassroots, everything that’s happened for us was born there," Jordison said in an interview with MTV at the time. "We wanted a video that showed the integrity of the band and the relationship with the fans. There’s no special effects — there were kids falling through ceilings, flying through glass, jumping off roofs." Needlessly to say, there was a few casualties: Two Maggots ended up getting minor cuts from broken glass and two other fans were taken away after smashing up a rented Ford Taurus with baseball bats. But the biggest casualty was the house in which the main action was set. That got utterly annihilated. "[My] understanding was that the people who owned the house uses it as an income property, so they were going to remodel anyway," guitarist James Root told Metal Injection after the fact. "To what extent, I don’t know, but they’re definitely going to be remodeling now!” Truth be told, the fans on hand had been directed to act wild, but not totally wreck the premises. However, after Slipknot DJ and resident wildest man Sid Wilson broke a window, all hell broke loose. Ultimately, Slipknot’s label Roadrunner Records had to foot a $50,000 bill for the unplanned damages. Worth it? We think so.
