For practice they have the mountain closed to the public until 8:30 am. So we are up at 2:30. Leave for the mountain by 3:00. Through the toll gate at the bottom at 3:30. In our pit area to set up by 4:00 am. Drivers meeting at 5am. First car out on the course as soon as it is light enough to drive without headlights.
Done by 8:30 am, packed up and off the mountain by 9:00 am and back to the motel by 10:00 am. We catch a nap of sorts, run some errands, hit the grocery store, pick up race gas, do a little maintenance on the race car. Check the load out on the RRE Box Van for the next morning and somehow try to get a little sleep. Eat-sleep-race-repeat.
The weather forecast in Colorado is kind of a suggestion. It is currently listed as clear and sunny for race day. However it is said that if you dont like the weather here in Colorado Springs, just wait 30 minutes. They will still run the race in the rain. But excessive hail or ice buildup at the higher elevations can get the course shortened to Devils Playground or even Glen Cove.
We are set up in the pits now Saturday night. Race starts at 7:30 am. Check the PPIHC website for info on the livestream, live scoring and live audio broadcast.

We picked up the little Starlet at the port a couple weeks ago and went over it for the specific Pikes Peak rules. We towed it to Colorado early this week. We got through tech inspection on Monday. Since then it has been practice sessions each day this week up on the mountain. Thursday we got snowed out for the top section and then ran it in thick fog as possible on Friday morning. Yagi-San set the 4th fastest time up on the top in the limited session. Maybe he was faster because he could not see the 1000 foot drop offs for all the fog!
On our snow day off, we added our "hando-maedo" Colorado Springs Scavenger Hunt® radiator and intercooler water spray system after the car started running warm on the longer qualifying section. We also took some time to tidy up the airflow into and around the radiator and oil cooler. Other than this, the car has been running and behaving great!

We've been in Colorado Springs for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb all week preparing for the race Sunday. We are crewing for Satoshi Yagi of Yagi Kantai (Team Yagi) out of Tokyo Japan again this year. Yagi-San is driving his 1990 Toyota Starlet EP82.
Yagi-San has some serious pedaling to do to keep up with the cars in his division. This little car is too modified for the Time Attack division. So the factory stock Porsche GT2 RS, 935/19 and NSX Hybrid are all safe from its wrath. We are listed in Pikes Peak Open. Basically anything goes as long as it kinda mostly resembles a known manufactured car and is not an open wheel car. Full tube frame, motor moved in the chassis, drive wheels unlimited, all the power adders you want, full aero... anything goes, run what you brung.
Last year Yagi-San finished 54th overall out of 66 entries. Finishing ahead of a Shelby Super Snake and a Viper even :-p His time was 12 minutes 33 seconds.
The motor is a slightly built 5E-FTE 1.5 liter turbo. The turbo is a Britz V200 with a stock EVO 8 FMIC. Satoshi himself tuned the Link G4X AtomX ECU running injectors from a Mark II. Clutch is a metallic Exedy and flywheel and a TRD LSD hook up the power with a taller 4.2 final drive. The car is running Cusco coil over suspension. Brakes are from an AE111 Levin and Brig brake pads get the 2000lb (with driver) car stopped. It has Volk 15x8 TE37 Wheels and Yokohama Advan 225/50-15 A050 tires.

We are taking a break from our normal EVO work this week to run a 1990 Toyota EP82 Starlet at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year.
The driver Satoshi Yagi ( /yagi.kantai ) sent us the car from Japan. We picked it up at the port and went over it for the specific Pikes Peak rules and towed it to Colorado early this week.
We got through tech inspection on Monday. Then it has been practice sessions each day this week up on the mountain. This may be the lowest power and physically smallest car running up here. Satoshi has some serious pedaling to do to keep up with the cars in this class. Satoshi and Dai Yoshihara are the only Japanese drivers on the mountain this year.

Satoshi is more concerned with getting some experience on the mountain so he brought his Starlet hill climb car from Japan. The car has been running decently this week. An early issue with the oil pressure we figured out. On one run a clip fell off the shift cables but an EVO spare that we had with us worked out fine. Other than that it has been basic maintenance.

I have always believed in little cars that can get it done. The character of the car reminds me of my 1989 Mirage Turbo.

Another year with the RRE #vwdoublecab at #semashow2022 with @zeitronix.inc
The #berniebergman 2443 cc type 1 motor runs an 88mm full circle crank, CIMA 94mm pistons, H Beam rods, ported and polished big valve heads, 30mm full flow oil pump and an Engle FK7 Cam. Dual Weber 44mm IDA carbs and a 911 style fan shroud.
#davefoltstransmissions built the trans with freeway flyer gears to bury the speedo at VDO. #acindustries disc brakes haul it down nicely from those speeds.

Here is Jeff's description of the race:
The flagger walks in front of the car and points his flags at me, I nod giving the official ‘let her rip’ and he waves both green flags, rpms hits the limiter, clutch is worked nicely as it grips, tires spin, it's a great start, off into the immediate pea-soup fog.
For the next 2 miles I'm driving from memory, I breach through the fog at around the picnic ground straight and shoot onto it in 3rd gear, snap 4th gear flat to the boards, grab 5th gear, start braking and heal-toeing back to 3rd for the medium left-hander at the end, this is a fun section, I'm in my element, I know once through this section it goes back to wet and foggy. I fly into Glen Cove and thread the needle past the gate house, then get into the ‘W’s which are short straights, hairpin turns.
I take the fast left-hander at Devil's Playground onto the fast top section. I hit the gnarliest deep fog, I try to keep the speed up but I've lost all my reference points which is the topography that has my markers, cant see 5 feet in front of the car. If you were standing still you might have 50 feet of visibility, trying to go fast doing 70-80, 90 or even 100mph means you get through that 50 feet in less than a second, your literally a half-second away from sheer disaster, but all competitors are in the same boat, I am now heading up the straight to Cog Cut, I almost miss it but I throw the car into and use the inside ditch to make the turn, a longer right hander leads to the last hairpin right which feeds into a long left hander and through the fog the finish line flagger shows himself waving the two chequer flags with joy.
Final results say that we finished 31st, which is a great jump from our qualifying start order of 58th, and we got to the top. I'm so happy we were allowed to go to the top, and that we got there.
Special thanks to Mike, Matt and Norma and all the team back at RRE behind the scenes helping. And of course a thanks to my wife Catherine for being there for me. Thank you for following.
