Ever wondered what made your favorite “Pop” record popular? How does Katy Perry do it? Lady Gaga? Britney Spears?
Aside from sharing a producer from time to time (*wink wink* 😉) there are a few songwriting techniques they all utilize to make their timeless platinum records. 💿
1. Get to the hook FAST! 💨 Thanks to social media, the average attention span is about 7-30 seconds. If you haven’t made a memorable melody by then, chances are, they’ve already moved on. In fact, a lot of timeless pop starts with the chorus! (Bad Blood by Taylor Swift, She Loves You by The Beatles, to name a few)⚡️
2. Start your verse and end your chorus with a guiding question, or demand.⁉️ Give them something to quip for their friends when they show the song off for the first time. Keep them wondering “what’s next??” (“I want it that way” a la Backstreet Boys, “Who do you think you are?” from Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri, etc.)
3. Repetition legitimizes.🔄 This applies to both lyrics and melodies! Sometimes simple IS that much better. You don’t need more than one word (and sometimes even one NOTE!) for a powerful hook. (“Shots” by LMFAO feat. Lil Jon, the Post-Chorus to “Halo” by Beyoncé, “Hallelujah,” by Leonard Cohen)
