28 now, and I can still feel that same jitter from walking into Liberty Fairs for an internship. The talks with my mom about choosing an unconventional path, the confidence—or maybe the arrogance—that kept saying go anyway.
The same feeling I had three years later when I asked Ouigi if I could do a pop-up at 150 Nevins as an intern. He didn’t hesitate. He told me, “I’m saying yes not because the work is good yet, but because in all these years, you’re the first to ask.”
That was 6 years ago.
I’ve always struggled with being present. Maybe the creativity is escapism. But having a child changes your sense of time. One minute they’re not here, the next you’re planning their third birthday.
Now I’m learning to be present—in fatherhood and in my work.
Twelve years ago I made a decision. I’ve steered off course, questioned myself, felt the loneliness and heartbreak.
My momma bled for this. Her momma bled for this. We gone see this through.
Reaching one year in a business I’m proud of… it feels worth it.
Fatherhood reminds me not to count the days, but to make the days count.
