Artist spotlight: RM23
@rm23_uk are an experimental sound ensemble creating improvised soundscapes from field recordings, found sounds, treated objects, guitars, gongs, synths, voice, and live processing.
Their work draws on musique concrète, drone, noise, ambient music, and live sonic manipulation. Each performance is shaped by spontaneity, deep listening, and the space they are performing in.
No two RM23 sets are ever repeated. Each one unfolds as a one-off dialogue between sound, place, atmosphere, and audience.

Sunday 26th was supposed to be a full band gathering. Unfortunately, due to epic road closures leading to hugely extended travel times and monumental traffic caused by the London Marathon, Alicia Mâ had to turn back and stay home. When we made our official ‘debut’ at @konsztruktingsoundz last year, we were delighted to be so well received, and surprised when one of the other improvisers -James A Smith- responded with a poem stimulated by the sounds sampled in this short extract.
We used synths, treated objects, live sampling, gongs and vocals to set up an atmosphere heavy with tolling bells and sinister undertones, punctuated by the murmuring of mythical Sirens conjuring up a storm.

As our next live performance approaches (Thursday May 14th, Tones and Drones), it seems appropriate to remember this; our first truly public performance (following some test gigs in The Intimate Space, Hornsey) for Lev Dudas’ #konsztruktingsoundz at the Fishermen’s Chapel in Leigh on Sea. Our set was inspired by the shipwrecks in the ocean around that locale, and ancient legends of Sirens of the Sea luring hapless sailors to their end.
We have something very different planned for Tones and Drones, and there’ll be more news for a June surprise shortly….
