Me and @lizlawrencemusic have been training hard to walk across Ireland, from Dublin to Westport, ending at the peak of Croagh Patrick. It is a small country but right now our route is roughly 270 miles, all on foot, with our lives on our backs. We start at the end of March and it should take us around three weeks. We are doing this in memory of Jessie Lawrence, whose loss we feel with astonishing rawness every single day.
These long walks have been cold and muddy, and peaceful and meditative. The idea of pilgrimage makes so much sense to me now. Jessie was a walker - a stomper, really - and so many of my memories involve stomping around with her in all weather. I wanted to include a picture of her walking, but in all of the photos I have, she’s so far ahead of us, way up front. But I love the one of her and Liz together.
If you have donated already then thank you so much. If you have a spare few quid, please read more about the walk and Jessie on Liz’s Justgiving page, link in bio etc.
PS I spend my life in leggings eating flapjacks now
PPS guess which walk took place the day after many Christmas pints
A few weeks ago me and @lizlawrencemusic went to the Lakes and made a video for her beautiful new song Yeti. For a brief moment away from the stress, have a watch of some gorgeous mountains and look out for a thirsty sheep. Link in bio etc
Obviously I’m doing a substack. Obviously! It’s called the Zapper, it’s writing about TV from a more personal perspective and it’s free, so sign up if you fancy that and if you like it please share it because this is the only time I have truly regretted leaving Twitter, yeah cheers thanks a lot
When I was a student, I bought the Guardian on Saturdays in the hope that it would make me smarter. Writing for the Guide and Weekend was genuinely a dream come true; writing cover stories blew my mind. Thank you to all the editors who let me have a go. Some favourites, my first Guide cover (Gossip), first Weekend cover (RIP The Bridge), can’t wait to see what’s next.
