During the restoration process, we finally set the original Flex-Lume letters back into this incredible turn-of-the-century garage sign. Pieces like this tell the story of early American roadside service stations and independent garages when craftsmanship and durability mattered. The worn steel backing, cast letters, and untouched patina are exactly what collectors and historians chase today — honest age and original character you just can’t reproduce.
Flex-Lume was based out of Rochester, New York, during the early automotive era and became known for supplying industrial and automotive-related products as America’s car culture exploded in the early 1900s. Rochester itself was a powerhouse for manufacturing and innovation during that time, making signs like this a surviving piece of America’s mechanical backbone. Bringing one back to life and preserving its history is what this hobby is all about.

This is a sign from the late 40s early 50s that came out of Cleveland Ohio underneath it. It says the Yakety yak bar liquor going down about three years after the bar started. They changed the name of it so they painted over everything so it’s got really early, black and green and white porcelain underneath it. It’s gonna take us probably a good week to go through and strip the paint off of it but when it’s done, it will look absolutely amazing saving one piece of history. #Bar #RustBeltAmericana #scrap #neon Clark Miller
