After entering @npr ’s 2026 Tiny Desk Competition, RJAM Students Kole Dixon and Beck Holland are hoping to secure a performance at the desk in NPR’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, an interview on the station’s famed All Things Considered show, and a 10-city tour this summer, including a show in San Francisco.
Dixon’s original composition “demo 8 / heavier” was highlighted as a “Top Shelf” pick in the contest at the beginning of April in a live episode hosted by Bobby Carter.

From @nytimes No. 1 Jazz Album of 2020 to the Cha Chi Ming Recital Hall at SFCM!
Jazz saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins dropped in for an inspiring masterclass with RJAM students—including how to actually swing harder (hint: it’s all about dynamics).
Collaborating and learning from top jazz artists with national (and international) touring careers is a key pillar of the RJAM program. SFCM’s RJAM students get one-on-one and masterclass opportunities that help them model their careers after some of the most in-demand musicians in the scene today.

San Francisco's known for its occasionally cool weather, but nothing's cooler than Miles Davis.
SFJAZZ is celebrating the centennial of the iconic trumpeter's birthday on May 26, and SFCM's RJAM Department has already sold out their part of it: A side-by-side concert with student ensembles led by RJAM Executive Director Jason Hainsworth and faculty members Helen Sung and Anthony Hervey.
RJAM side-by-side concerts are a unique setting that parallels the real-life playing opportunities that can pop up with little notice for working jazz musicians. Repertoire isn't decided until shortly before the concert. "This is really supposed to be like a residency, where you meet people and bring in your charts," RJAM Assistant Director Amelie-Anna Hinman says. "That pressure cooker is a very realistic vision of what the music industry looks like at the moment."
"Miles possessed a rare combination of supreme intelligence, unapologetic individuality, and a musical vision that changed the course of music several times," faculty member Anthony Hervey says.
