How to tackle internship and work experience-related questions effectively?
B-school interviews often dive deep into your professional journey to assess your skills, involvement, problem-solving abilities, and industry awareness.
Here's how you can prepare:
1. Create a latest CV that highlights every responsibility and role youโve assumed at work. For each point, prepare a STARIL (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Impact, Learning) backup.
Example: If you led a product launch, explain the situation (market need), your role (task), what you did (action), measurable results in the form of analytics & KPIs, overall impact on your team/company, and personal learnings.
This CV will also be helpful later during your summer internships if you make it into a B-school.
Be ready to discuss your role in detail, covering:
1. Your specific responsibilities: Understand your day-to-day tasks and key achievements.
2. Team impact: How your work contributed to your teamโs objectives.
3. Company impact: Connect your efforts to your companyโs goals or bottom line.
B-schools expect you to have a holistic view of the industry youโve worked in. Prepare on:
1. Industry trends: Be aware of emerging technologies, key challenges, and growth areas.
Example: If youโre from fintech, know about UPI advancements, digital banking trends, and regulatory updates.
2. Competitor strategies: What are other companies in your space doing differently or better?
3. Macroeconomic factors: Understand how interest rates, inflation, or geopolitical changes impact your industry.
4. Key people: Know influential leaders in your domain. This shows your curiosity and awareness.

B-school interviews can cover a wide spectrum of topics. To keep it within bounds of preparation letโs divide them into the following categories:
Internship/Work experience
Other achievements & hobbies
Personality/Career goals/Behavioral questions
Current affairs/General awareness
College/Program-specific questions
Today, weโll focus on 1.
Your undergraduate academics will likely form the bulk of the conversation since thereโs no work experience to discuss. Here's how you can prepare:
1. Thoroughly revise your coursework: Focus on core concepts and foundational subjects. You cannot get these wrong.
2. Go deeper in a few areas: Pick 1-2 subjects you genuinely like and know wellโthis helps when asked, "Whatโs your favorite subject?"
3. Projects: Understand your academic projects inside out. Use the STARIL framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Impact, Learning) to structure your explanation.
The emphasis on undergraduate academics decreases with years of work experience, but you still need to be prepared.
1. Basic understanding: Revise fundamental concepts of your UG domain. For instance, as an Electronics and Communication engineer, I had revised transistors, logic gates, digital communication, networks, Internet Protocol, 5G, or emerging technologies etc.
2. Deep dive into a few subjects: Choose a few topics and go deeper into them, again helpful if you are asked "Whatโs your favorite subject?"
3. Connect UG knowledge to work experience: Show how your academic background has helped build your professional knowledge and skills.
1. Anticipate questions: For instance, if your UG project was on telemedicine, prepare for questions like:
What are the latest trends in telemedicine?
Name a few telemedicine startups and their business models.
What are the technical challenges in this field?
2. Stay updated: Relate academic knowledge to real-world applications
