‘The Rescue’ (2026) was my attempt at healing old Artax-related wounds 😅🐴and I thought it’d be fun to bring a character back from my 2024 painting ‘The Guild of Harpys’

This was a really good exercise in restraint for me, but I knew I wanted the background to stay loose so the figure would stand out - going to keep experimenting with that balance of detail vs looseness ✨

I thought I heard it from the birds,
Then the swaying drifts of moss,
Then the flute you gently grasp,
Which sings more brightly than the stars,
But louder still than all of these,
Something in my heart that breathes,
And suddenly all around is song,
As we continue to drift along 🪷
“Sanctuary” • Watercolour • Original sold
On view at @nucleusportland til May 1st • The inspiration for this piece came from my walks around the local bird sanctuary, and seeing all these archways of branches dripping with moss. The chipmunk couple are part of a larger story I am developing (and eventually sharing more fully) 🐿️💗🐿️
This piece came out of a photo I snapped of a rocky bank by my home - when I let my eyes go unfocused I saw something else and I just wasn’t quite sure what it was til I did some colour studies. I highly recommend using this technique if you’re stumped :) it is very fun!

This piece was one of the last ones I completed for my upcoming show with @nucleusportland , and I think it was like looking in a mirror 😹 But there’s something really comforting about a messy desk and being surrounded by unfinished cups of tea/coffee…

Here’s a closer look at some of the ink illustrations I got to do for the Last Unicorn - before watercolours this was my primary medium and it was so comforting to return to hatching and linework - it also made me really nostalgic for the old fairytale books I grew up with ✨⚔️🦄
