Printed my first postcard exactly two years ago. But it was unpredicted hell enduring the r&d it took to arrive at the end result - forty-five days in nasty summer of stuffy hotels, bnbs and industrial printing presses whilst nursing a severe covid-like malady. I had no idea how to make a physical product to offer - but the thought of just practising photography as a service seemed so easy by comparison. Why did I even think that making these would be fun and what the f was to be done for a tangible “product”? My head spun around margins, markups, and MRP labels for a few weeks. All while going through multiple presses making print samples and trying to beat the cost down to its lowest. Some presses didn’t even want to work with small fry like me - ending things with rude snubs. By the third day I recall thinking it’d be so much better if I gave it up and returned to Bombay. “Darned postcards…”. If not for my partner injecting her doggedness of spirit into me I’d certainly have abandoned it. So followed another forty days of it - by the end of which: - i had turned into a retail tycoon - i could market even mere pencils - i was living on a diet of a particularly repulsive, herbal cough syrup - i had in my hands a labour of love for something handcrafted that i hoped everyday folk might appreciate. Of course, only two of those are true, and those who know me know well that i could neither balance sheets nor equations. But pictures I can do. Why was I doing this?, I imagine you ask. For years I’d been thinking of easing into the world of printed photographs… but with nary the will nor the right images to see it through. The heart desired a means to put something to paper in an accessible way outside of the expensive niches of photobooks and galleries. Nothing highfalutin or fine art, just pictures of places perhaps. The simple stuff shouldn’t always have to jostle so hard for space alongside the moody white rooms of art photography. And so came about these postcards… something to slow one down, to put pen to paper and think of a friend. (you’ve made it this far, do read the rest in the comments?)

Early in my career I was introduced to Ansel Adams’ landscape work which to me is still standard-setting. Perhaps this quote of his sums up my thinking though my work hasn’t really gone the landscape photography route. Even so, I am always reminded of his “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” (third slide) when I look at my own rendition of a moonrise from Landour (second slide) - which is available as a beautiful print from the website. This image was made a few years before my recent tryst with Landour began* - during my first visit there one September. The rains had begun to retreat and the famed mountain views from a crowded Lal Tibba were showing in all their glory, but while the tourists lined up for a rusty binocular that studied snowy peaks, my eye settled on the little moon coming up in the opposite direction over the cotton candy clouds. The first time I saw snowfall was in Mussoorie, and it just wouldn’t cease much to the joy of everybody around, until it became a pain because no one could leave with the one road to Dehra jammed up. I foresaw this happening and had a booking at nice colonial hotel to come back to for tea and pakoras every now and then in between walking the streets for photographs. It is tragic how climate change will continue to make the magic of snow more inaccessible, perhaps a distant dream soon for lower altitude hill towns like Mussoorie. This is a set from that evening and the next morning when the snow looked like gold for a bit.
