Shō Yamagushiku’s poetry navigates belonging and intergenerational bonds through a distinctive use of language. His vivid and obscure diction create a space to confront personal tragedy and transform it into a better future. Come out and hear more from Shō Yamagushiku as we kick off season seven of Riverbed. Yamagushiku will perform virtually alongside artists Qattuu and Whitney French on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The night will start with an open mic, so bring a poem or short piece of prose or performance to share. This event is PWYC with a suggested donation of $20-$25. Riverbed Reading Series is an inclusive, experimental gathering space. Part poetry reading, part musical performance, part cabaret, we are driven by the belief that the artistic spheres are connected. @shoyamagushiku @saw_centre #poetry #Ottawa

How does memory shape our future? Poet and writer Whitney French suggests that “the heirloom of memory shapes identity, which can be to the detriment of the person carrying it.” This concept grounds her latest novel Syncopation, which explores Black futurism through an intricate portrayal of memory, loss, technology, and nature. We cannot wait to hear more when Whitney joins us at Club SAW on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Come out as Whitney French as Qattuu and Shō Yamagushiku help us kick off season seven of Riverbed. The night will start with an open mic, so bring a poem or short piece of prose or performance to share. This event is PWYC with a suggested donation of $20-$25. “We are strong, we are a force that cannot be ignored” Qattuu announces in Inuktitut and then English at the opening of her album, Midnight Sun. Combining throatsinging with storytelling, and rock-infused beats, Qattuu asks us to build a future by recognizing each other’s culture and creating collectively. Come out and hear more from this Inuk, Ottawa-based performer as we kick off season seven of Riverbed. Qattuu will perform alongside poet Shō Yamagushiku and novelist Whitney French on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The night will start with an open mic, so bring a poem or short piece of prose or performance to share. This event is PWYC with a suggested donation of $20-$25. We are back for season seven, and our first iteration features poetry, fiction and throatsinging performances centred on the theme of futurisms. Envision our future. Ask yourself: how can we collectively shift these existing sociopolitical structures? What can I do? How can I disrupt? This is futurisms. Come find out how Qattuu, Shō Yamagushiku and Whitney French approach this topic on Wednesday, May 13. The night will start with an open mic, so bring a poem or short piece of prose or performance to share (2 minute time cap) to Club SAW. This event is PWYC with a suggested donation of $20-$25.
