Introducing SOIS-299-04: Thrifting and Slow Fashion in the Circular Economy! This Fall 2026 course takes a deep dive into the dynamic ways that “thrifters” bring new life to old garments and accessories – procured from re-sale shops and Goodwill – to cultivate a distinct style of self-presentation, to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle, and to signal an aesthetic beyond mainstream fast-fashion. With hands-on stitching-activities that support course readings and reflective exercises, students can expect to gain insight into thrift culture and the craft of visible mending. They will also gain skills to make basic clothes by hand as an act of slow fashion. The course assumes no prior stitching experience, but students should expect to stitch every class under the guidance of the instructor. At the heart of the course is a maker project where students have the option to procure clothing or textile material from secondhand stores or the Goodwill “bins” and re-purpose the material into a new-to-them wearable garment. Students will be intentional about the environmental and cultural impacts of their work, and will learn historical precedents that required people to “make do and mend,” specifically during periods of war and national scarcity. Such mending techniques include Boro (from Japan), Kantha (Bangladesh and India) and darning (England). We hope you'll join us in exploring the intentional use and re-use of garments and fashion!
RIT proudly announces Professor Rebecca J. DeRoo as the next William A. Kern Professor in Communications — a leadership appointment that advances interdisciplinary scholarship, elevates student engagement, and strengthens the College of Liberal Arts’ role as a hub for critical research and creative inquiry as we shape the future of liberal arts education.
A force to be reckoned with on Capitol Hill, Barbara Jordan was the embodiment of strength while privately facing struggles few ever knew of.
