Recording 14 channels (or more) may look excessive, but the reason I do it is this:
Drums are usually one of the first parts to be recorded or replaced in the recording phase. And as we all know: things change throughout the process. By recording multiple overheads, close mics, room mics and character mics you maintain the ability to adapt the sound fitting to where song is evolving.

1: only mono overhead, crotch mic, kick/snare/hi-hat/toms close mics
2: only rooms, stereo overheads, kick/snare close mics

About 10 years ago I started making videos where I’m playing along to songs that don’t have any drums on the original recording. I called them ‘Songs Without Drums’. There’s still a bunch of them on YouTube.

I stopped making them because they would be blocked on socials more often. The last one I did was 8 years ago and the online rules have since then changed, which brings me to thinking of bringing this concept back to life. It’s just too much fun, playing along to records. Just like when I started out as a kid.

This particular video from that time, of Dark Matter by @emilienicolasofficial , still brings me a lot of joy, despite my inexperience in recording drums back then.

This was a fun one to track. Had I been in a bigger space I probably would have given more power to get more air moving in the space. But being in the booth you have to give enough energy to the song without ‘overplaying’ the acoustics you’re in. I love solving these kinds of puzzles in the moment. Also, a great engineer/mixing engineer (@exaltostudios ) helps a lot in these situations

For those interested: this is the 28” Rolling Bomber kick and a 12” snare I made after one @nickyhustinx made himself. It has no bottom head and there’s half a snare wire underneath the top head. It’s quite a strong vibe!

Last December, Mischa Porte and I played a fully improvised set @inderimboe
Since we’ve played together before, I knew it was going to be a fun night. But I didn’t expect how special it turned out to be.
Shows like these remind me how much I love improvisation: There’s a different kind of tension and energy compared to a prepared show, more risk, more focus, more listening, more exploration. So much interaction happens all at the same time.
The fact that this moment exists only once, that it will never happen in exactly the same way again, makes it even more powerful.
