Today, we conclude API Heritage Month by spotlighting Ris Tena, one of our dedicated PWG 111 members and volunteers. Ris is an Assistant Production Supervisor and associate with a career spanning from commercial production to film, TV, and film festivals. Her journey began in 2016, but her passion for creative production has been a driving force since her teenage years. Ris takes immense pride in her contributions in building this union not only due to feeling seen as a woman of color in the industry, but also due to feeling her values aligned along with the organization, leadership, and fellow members.
Reflecting on her experience, Ris shares, “I am often the only Filipinx on set where my identity has often felt invisible. Since joining Local 111 and having been in sessions surrounding DEI, Transformation, Equity, and Parity, and what it means to be a person of color in the industry…it’s helped shift my personal perspective on how to hold myself on set; that I’m not just a POC laborer but someone of value and skill that happens to a POC, and proud. I’d like my legacy to be a visionary dynamo with heart and spirit. A woman of full Filipina heritage making waves in an industry that never represented us, even though Filipinos are natural entertainers with great talent and are gracious hosts at heart. Giving my people their flowers simply by existing.” Hashtags: #APIHeritage #WomenInFilm
