I met Rutger in 2017 a few weeks after I moved to Amsterdam, at a design event. That’s where I met him and his amazing group of talented friends.
But with Rutger something clicked instantly. At first I thought it was because we like a lot of the same stuff, or maybe it was just one of those things you can’t explain. But the truth is that with Rutger you didn’t need to have any special background. Some people are simply unique like that, easy to connect with, naturally magnetic.
Good people who attract other good people. And Rutger was exactly that.
Beyond being an incredible designer, someone whose work and style inspired me and everyone around him, Rutger was one of the best human beings I’ve ever known. Funny, smart, gentle, generous, just the best.
After I left Amsterdam, Rutger went back to painting graffiti. We always joked that he got back into it “a bit too late,” and how sad it was that we never got the chance to paint together like we planned.
The name he chose for himself recently was *After* a name that now carries a different, deeper meaning.
Rest in peace, my brother.
I will remember you for the rest of my life.
