Thank you to everyone who came out early this morning to stand together outside the Supreme Court for our sister, Yuko. We could clearly see that strength and justice already exist in community, rather than in a system that was never built for us, women, migrants, and sex workers. We’ll be sharing further updates and details soon.

Our next gathering for Yuko will be at the Supreme Court of Victoria on William St. This hearing will be the start of many that will lead to the trial of Yuko's murderer. Please wear red to honour our lost sisters as we hang up lanterns and light some incense. Justice for Asian migrant sex workers. Justice for Yuko. ✊️

Thank you everyone for coming out and gathering for our sister, Yuko, yesterday morning to stand together in solidarity. Thank you as well to everyone who has been showing up since 14 March at the Victorian State Library. It has been a long and heavy month. To everyone behind the scenes carrying emotional labour, volunteers, speakers, it has meant so much to be holding this together as a community. We know the outcome of the court decision yesterday was devastating. It left many of us feeling gutted and disappointed, witnessing a decision that did not stand with Yuko. It makes us question was this ever about Yuko? Or was it all about protecting the killer who is still alive? This is a painful reminder, again, that the justice system has never been built for us. We, as communities, are the only hope to make change in this court system not only for Asian migrant sex workers, but for all women, migrants, and sex workers everywhere in this so-called Australia. We carry our sisters with us, and we believe they would be proud of every step we take as a community to tell the truth, to centre our sisters who were full of life. The hundreds of incense we all put together, the smoke connected all of us with our sisters who never came home. We clearly see the strength and justice that exists outside the court, in our community, rather than in the court system. We see how many people out there know the story and are watching this case of Yuko together. We will continue to fight, to bring everyone together, and to challenge racism and colonial systems. From government to law enforcement to the courts, anti-SWers, racism and discrimination is built into every part of the system. We continue to challenge it at every level. In solidarity 🏮

Court outcome update: brief report from today will be coming soon! Today, our community gathered for Yuko, a beloved migrant sex worker as the magistrate court dropped the rape charges against her alleged killer. At 9:00 am today, in front of the Melbourne Magistrate Court, in Yuko's Legacy. Over 100 community members gathered for justice. Migrants, sex workers, unionists, women’s rights advocates wore red, Yuko’s favourite colour, lanterns in hands, in demand of an end to the conditions that lead to Yuko’s murder & assault. At 10:30 am today, inside the Melbourne Magistrate Court, the magistrate delivered ruling on the 3 charges against her killer: • Rape - section 38 charge dropped; “absence of evidence” • Murder - section 3A (unintentional killing in the course of rape) charge dropped; “absence of evidence” • Murder - Common Law he pleaded not guilty; will face trial. Next hearing: 9:30 am, Thursday 16 April Let us grieve the wounds that were re-opened again today by the “justice system.” We are reaffirmed, once again: we cannot rely on this system. It is up to us to fight for justice for Yuko. For every migrant, every woman, every worker, every mother, every sex worker who never came home. Our fight continues: For an end to the silencing of survivors, and to build community-based systems of justice. for an end to border policing, visa crackdowns, and raids in our homes, workplaces, and communities. for decriminalisation & an end to the policing of all forms of sex work.

We want to update our community on the outcome of today’s committal hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in relation to the killing of our sister, Yuko. Her accused killer, Michael James Chalmers, was facing three charges: - Murder - Rape - 3A murder (unintentional killing in the course of a violent act) Today, the Magistrate dismissed the charges of rape and 3A murder. The Magistrate stated that the evidence presented in relation to these charges was unlikely to meet the legal threshold of being proven beyond reasonable doubt. The charge of murder remains, and Chalmers entered a formal plea of not guilty. This marks the end of proceedings at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. The case will now continue in the Supreme Court of Victoria, with a directions hearing scheduled for 16 April 2026, and a jury trial expected in 2027. We stand together in solidarity, grief, and love for our sister Yuko. We will continue to show up for her as her case progresses through the courts. It was incredibly moving and powerful to see nearly 100 members of our community gather outside the court for Yuko today. Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke, and held space. We are endlessly grateful to be part of such a strong and beautiful community ❤️
