Using a scanner, Gao Yutao (b. 1988) manipulates his subjects to create images that seem to emerge from a bottomless void. Because of the scanner’s shallow depth of field, only the surfaces touching the glass are rendered with sharp intimacy, creating a distinctive topographic feel. This dynamic scanning process results in intentional digital smearing and a calculated glitch aesthetic.

“While the scanner is traditionally a mundane office tool—a piece of equipment for the repetitive labor of the modern workplace—I have spent the last eleven years reclaiming it as a tool for artistic production. My studio houses six different models, including A3 and A4 desktop versions of various brands and handheld devices. I even modify them slightly. This equipment has become my unique and essential way of observing the world.”

Above: “A Nocturnal Cicada Inside the Electric Wires (一只侵入电线内部的夜蝉)” 2025. 166x122cm.
Gao used a scanner to move a cicada specimen across the flatbed. As light is shone through its body, the cicada appears to be “decoded.” The light disperses into a spectrum, effectively returning the creature to a state of light.
Works by Shangkai Kevin Yu, now on view at THE BLANC.

The two ornate coat racks—whimsically called the “coatrak sisters” by the artist—are given the dignity and presence of sitters in a formal portrait. Standing side by side, their curved hooks and patterned shafts are imbued with individuality. The surrounding interior amplifies this sense of character: the colors and patterns are inspired by 1980s visuals, and the carpet is based on Matisse’s paper collages. Yu grew up with these racks in Taiwan, and here they are reimagined not as furniture, but as guardians of memory, poised and elegant within a lovingly constructed world.
“Working Couple,” oil on canvas over panel, 2020, 24” x 36”.
Inspired by Grant Wood’s iconic “American Gothic,” the work replaces the stern farmer and his pitchfork with two humble cleaning tools: a mop and a broom. Propped against a brick wall, the pair becomes a symbolic couple—upright, stoic, silently bound together by labor.
The exhibition “Cache Memory: Qin Tan and Shangkai Kevin Yu” is on view through December 6.

Paul Hutchinson - “City Within”
Now on view at THE BLANC, New York, through December 6, 2025.
Bringing together a decade of photographs, writings, and a moving-image work, the exhibition traces the subtle ways urban life shapes our emotions, rhythms, and sense of belonging. Hutchinson’s gaze lingers on the overlooked — fragments of tenderness and endurance that form a quiet language of empathy.

THE BLANC is pleased to present“Cache Memory: Qin Tan & Shangkai Kevin Yu,”curated by Leo Yuan.
A subtle feeling of nostalgia permeates the works of both Qin Tan and Shangkai Kevin Yu. Yet it is difficult to find its source, like a longing for a place or moment that never quite existed, or for a memory tucked away in a hidden cache.

THE BLANC is pleased to present “Paul Hutchinson: City Within”, the first solo exhibition in the US by Berlin-based artist Paul Hutchinson, curated by Shem Jacobs and Leo Yuan.
⠀
Spanning a decade of photographs, writings, and moving-image works, “City Within” explores the delicate terrain between external realities and inner life — specifically, how the sensory and cognitive traces of the urban experience imprint themselves upon us.
Across interwoven media, Hutchinson constructs a language of empathy, endurance, and quiet resistance that emerges from the margins of the everyday. His works resist spectacle and hierarchy, privileging small acts of attention over grand gestures, and subtly merging the poetic with the political.
