The Phantom of the Market
Paper collage
Re-uploading this one because I was chucking stuff out over the weekend and found the original in a big pile of shit collages.
Title taken from Series 3 episode 5 of Only Fools and Horses. Swipe across to see a clip that had less-questionable language (it was the early 80s...).
Made using Rush Hour Crush messages found in the Metro newspaper between April 2019 - Dec 2020 / nearly 250 issues collected on buses and trains across Birmingham.

The installation occupies a state of purgatory.
The vitrine, a structure associated with display and preservation, becomes a device of suspension.
The empty vitrine offers no object to interpret.
A 'between state'.
An investigation without resolution.
Neither advancing nor concluded.
Caught between what was and what might follow.
Time inside the vitrine is neither progressing nor complete but paused.
Held between two other states.
Continuously deferred.
A managed delay. A regulated in-between.
Unresolved.
The work resists narrative closure.
It stages a condition of not-knowing, without clear authorship or intent.
In a form of secular purgatory: not abandoned, yet not functioning.
It occupies the uncomfortable space of waiting.

Jackie, 2026
Paper collage
John Edward Thompson "Jackie" Milburn (11 May 1924 – 9 October 1988) was an English football player principally associated with Newcastle United and England. He was also known as Wor Jackie (particularly in North East England, a Geordie dialectal, pronounced like "wor", meaning "our", as in "Our Jackie").

102- COLLAGE MUSIC MIXTAPE: @ripitup_startagain
I use collage as a way of sketching, storytelling and decompress. Whether it’s paper, video or sound, I want to create a new life for existing and often forgotten or overlooked ’things’.
Biography:
I am a Birmingham based artist making work that focuses on repurposing and reimagining. The two examples of collages I have included are good examples of different ways I work:
In ‘Dr Manhattan #2’, I painstakingly cut out all the figures from the entire Watchmen comic series and combined them in a semi-random order to try and create something akin to a line drawing.
In ‘Untitled #6’, I explore the relationship between ’the hand’ and ’the machine’. Using shapes informed by buildings across the city, I use code to determine composition, then laser cut fallen billboard posters to create jigsaw-like pieces which are then stuck by hand.
Tracklist:
The Street - Turn The Page
Dan Le Sav vs Scroobius Pip - Letter from God to Man
BIG SPECIAL - FOR THE BIRDS
The Horrors - Endless Blue
DIIV - Taker
Dead Man’s Bones - Dead Hearts
The Cure - Lullaby (Extended Mix)
Brand New - Jesus Christ
Modest Mouse - One Chance
The Music - The Dance

Rise Up, 2022
A3 print of handmade collage.
£25 on my shop. Link in bio.
I made this collage for my youngest brother’s 18th birthday. A few weeks ago, I noticed that he hadn’t framed it behind glass and it was covered in chocolate finger marks and scribble, like someone was testing a biro or a child had been unsupervised (I haven’t bothered asking which).
I’ve managed to scan the original and digitally tart it up (which has taken forever).
I like that the message in this collage has taken a new life. This was made well before Birmingham City FC were relegated to League One or taken over by Knighthead.
Exciting times to come if you’re a Bluenose. Hopefully.

House of Cards, 2025
Found metal
'House of Cards' continues the exploration of repurposing. These weathered Pay & Display machine panels, collected around Birmingham through 2024, show the marks of time and human interference, likely the result of failed attempts to reach the money within
This year, between @eprjcts Summer Camp Show and @parkside.gallery These Hands Make, I've subject two separate groups of fellow exhibitors and visitors to this stolen metal monster.
This is the final time it'll be shown, available for free to anyone who can house the beast. Approx 50x150x150cm.

@ripitup_startagain went around Birmingham with my figures. Now this city is in top of the places I wish to visit to lace more work. He did a really good job with these. Love them.
