A little lounge time before heading to Cannes for my 12th visit. In some ways, though, it will be a first time, as I’m no longer under the aegis of a particular company. I’m on my own steam, and proud of that accomplishment. I will be filing regular dispatches to my Premiere Party newsletter (subscribe!) and will have six reviews in The Hollywood Reporter. Stay tuned! A bientot.
And we’re back! Join Richard, Alison, and Producer Ben for a discussion about PROJECT HAIL MARY - the screen persona (and box office bankability) of Ryan Gosling, the film’s Oscar potential, and the nostalgic return of “the family-friendly alien buddy” to cinemas.
Please note that as of this week, we’re on our own podcast feed - NOT the Blank Check one. Fist our bumps by remembering to rate/review/subscribe!
It’s here! All the highs, lows, and Crashes of the Academy Awards 20 years ago, when Brokeback got broke. Click the newsletter link in my bio to find out why there are so many Martin McDonagh jokes contained in one recap. You’ll also find a special offer for new subscribers. Give it a read! I think you’ll enjoy.
After parting ways with Vanity Fair when his inappropriate relationship with RFK was exposed, culture writer and critic @rilaws joins TMAYF for our annual #oscars episode!! Richard helps us answer questions such as “why is F1 nominated,” “is Marty Supreme Josh Safdie’s apology for being an absent father,” and “what is the plot of Hamlet because we can’t remember.” Richard also discusses his fab new Critical Darlings podcast on the @blankcheckpod network and his Premiere Party newsletter, featuring the trenchant film and tv reviews that make him the father of the recap as we know it today. Accept no imitations! Listen at the link in our bio
My family’s beloved Duffy left this world today for a heaven full of unguarded snack tables, squirrels who want to be chased forever, and hopefully memories of how much we all loved him for brightening our lives for 15 years with his particular Scottish gruffness and pragmatism. A dream of a fellow. Rest well, sweet guy, little bean, Duffalo, my dear.
Loved these boxy little trains, loved zipping around Berlin for the first time, loved seeing my sophisticated British friends and eating good food and seeing movies. Thanks, @berlinale !
This week in Premiere Party. Subscribe to my brand-new newsletter (premiere party DOT com / link in bio) to read these reviews and recommendations—and more! I have some fun plans for winter 2026, including prophetic Oscar-race predictions, dispatches from Sundance and Berlin, and RECAPS (Traitors US, maybe Real Housewives of Rhode Island whenever that comes out??) Would love to have you join me.
