Numerous outlets are reporting the potential failure of the world’s largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam, in China. At over 2km long, it spans the famous Yangtze River. Flood damages from the recent rains currently sit at an estimated $20 billion yuan, and over 7,000 homes have been destroyed. Unbelievably, over 400 million people live downstream of the dam, including the entire Wuhan province. Our estimation is that Warragamba Dam needs about 200mm of rain falling in its catchment to fill completely! While this current low pressure system may not achieve that completely, it should provide a significant increase of 2-3 years of drinking water!
