International Boulevard is a vital corridor for Tempo Line 1T, moving about 15,000 riders daily between Downtown Oakland and San Leandro in dedicated bus-only lanes.
International Boulevard has long been a dangerous street for pedestrians. In 2023, AC Transit partnered with the City of Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) on a Quick Build project to better address safety concerns along International Blvd.
The project added vertical delineator posts, refreshed pavement markings to better define bus-only lanes, piloted speed cushions, and installed updated 25 mph speed limit signage along the corridor.
The results were immediate. Illegal entries into the bus lane dropped by 83%, and average vehicle speeds decreased by nearly 5 mph. Most importantly, pedestrian fatalities along International Boulevard fell to zero in 2025.
Through this partnership with OakDOT, AC Transit is improving safety, reliability, for riders, and the residents of Oakland.
